Extreme Cold

OK, FNG here and work 28/28 day schedule in N Dakota. Will be leaving F350, 6.4L for 28 days during winter. Truck has block heater, other than 50/50 antifreeze what do I need for truck to be ready to work when I return to work? Thanks in advance for any input.

I have been using an oil pan heater pad. It actually works better that the block heater. I have put one on my last two Desiel trucks and have one on my V-10 now. You can get them at NAPA- Car Quest - ect.... It gets vary cold here in Wyoming. Also the heater pad is about an 8th of the price to keep plugged in. Many people use them on tractors and snow plow truks and just keep them plugged in all winter. I even spliced 2 together put 1 on the oil pan & 1 on the transmission pan on my 2007 F-250 6.0h.

I would get a solar trickle charger and leave it on your dash.

I agree with slowmans, a charger for the battery and then about 4 hours before you are ready to use the truck plug the block heater in.

I have started my truck without any block heater plugged in at -1F without any issues.

Use syn oil.

i was going make a thread bout this and came across yours, i hear wabasto heaters are probably the best thing for a diesel but costly. im wondering what to do as well and i think that heat pads wont be enough from where im from up here in canada ur looking at some mornings with a -30-40 F start, which is about -27 to -40 celsius give or take. maybe im wrong but any suggestions?

I will say with the block heater, I've started mine at -25 no problems...make sure and let the glow plugs cycle fully though or it will sound like crap for a minute

The heater pads can deffinatly handle the task & you can get them is different sizes and wattage to fit your oil or trans pan even if alliminum they have a 3m sticky back. You have to use the high-temp rtv to prevent the corners from peeling over time. Very easy process. I used a popcicle stick. it took 10min to clean pan, install & route/ziptie the cord. Salt, water, and road sand have not hurt mine in any way. They are very resiliant/durable. It gets down to -40 on a regular basis here in Wyoming also. Just sayig if you dont like it take it off, or just tuck the cord and use it on thoes really cold days. The heater warms up very fast also. Happy hunting

Start mine at -10F with no heater just 5-40W syn oil, anti gel in the fuel and full cycle on the glow plugs, sounded like crap though for the first couple minutes. Normally I plug it in on a timer set to 2-4 hrs before I plan to leave in the morning when we get anything colder than +18F as the engine sounds sooo much happier.

A couple years back when we had -32F real temp it started just fine with the OEM block heater plugged in, no other pads or supplemental heaters needed and the engine sounded just like you had started on a summer day. I will admit with just a 10 min warm up cycle before taking off the trans was still a little sluggish in shifting until it fully warmed up.
