My wife just inherited a MAJOR project truck. It's a '56 F100, and she wants it to look original, but run, drive, & stop like a newer model. Her Grandfather bought it new, but it's sat out in the weather after being damaged on the farm for quite some time. I excited to rebuild this old truck for her, but realize that it's going to be a PITA to get it to where she wants it to be.
Her primary request is that it be the original color. The paint code on the VIN plate on the truck is "F". The truck is a light, or Baby blue color and appears to be the original color/paint on the truck. I did some searching on this site and a few others and couldn't find this paint code option for a '56. I see that in '57 there is an "F" paint code that is Starmist Blue which appears to look about right. Any idea about this paint code?
Oh yeah, tentatively, it will have a '93 Mustang F.I. 5.0/AOD with the upgraded 8.8 disc rearend I took out from under my '93 LX (I put a '04 IRS drivetrain in it). I'll upgrade the frontend to a R&P style disc brake frontend and try to keep the rest of the truck very close to original...(her request ).
There's a couple of explanations here. One, and probably the most likely, is Ford began using the F code blue late in 56 assembly and after the color charts were printed and distributed. Sometimes there will be a note on 57 (or whatever year) color cards that a particular color was also used the previous year. It's also possible car and truck codes were different for the same color, or the website isn't 100% accurate. Another possibility is the code was simply stamped wrong on the plate, which is not at all uncommon. All of this assumes your assumptions are correct.
'F' is not listed, so Wayne may be correct in that it is mis-stamped. Probably a colour code for a car. There's a retired parts guy, NumberDummy, who may be along and can shed some more light.
Fear not, there will be pictures...AND lots of questions. We are going to go try and get it next weekend. I say "try" because it is literally sitting out in the woods, and has been for 30 yrs or so. It's rough as a night in jail, but I really think its salvagable.
Here is a photo of a truck I painted where I had to get a color match done on the original paint. I have the PPG paint code if you would like to have it. The code was done a TCP Global here in San Diego, they do a lot of business on the internet so it should be easy to buy. Most paint supply houses no longer have mix codes for the older vehicles, it used to be that you could go into a paint store and give them the color code off the data plate but not so much anymore.
Does anybody have info on Canadian trucks (F-47/F-68) using completely different codes? My '50 F-68 has "PAINT - 21" stamped into the S/N plate...
The truck as I got it was two tone red with black fenders. Any help would be appreciated.
Paint 21 is Vermillion Red. Most all Canadian trucks were two-toned with black fenders.
The rest of your VIN breaks down to;
DF=F-68, 122" wheelbase
83=Pickup
H=Assembled at Home Office; Windsor, Ont.
50=1950 model year
33108=consecutive unit number
Most of members here are doing a build in a similar fashion (look original, drive modern) so you should be able to get a whole lot of help on it. Thankfully these old trucks have a strong desire for parts, so there are a whole lot of reproduction parts available. Mid-Fifty and NPD are both places worth getting a catalog from.
Welcome! Glad to hear another one is being saved. Great to hear of the family connection which makes it all that more special. Make sure you get some pics of your adventure bringing it out of the woods after its long rest!

That looks a lot like Grabber Blue, that's the color I'm painting my 56
I know that in 56 that "F" was a green color, but this '56 was definitely blue originally. My wife's granddaddy confirmed it was blue when he bought it new. He's old, but wicked sharp. And the inside (jams & all) are the same blue. I'm thinking it's the '57 color???
