Ford Code Tester

I have a Equus code tester for 81-95 fords, that I got at a garage sale. Unfortunatley it didn't come with any directions. Can anyone help me out, on how to use this on my truck??

You really dont need a code reader, but if you can take a picture I can tell you how to use it, basically you just plug it in, and flip the switch, and count the flashes, there are several lists online for the codes, make sure you write them down.

do I have to have the truck running for the test or not??? that is where I am confused????

there are 2 tests, KOEO (Key On Engine Off) and KOER (Key On Engine Running), you basically hook up the tester, turn on the key, and watch the reader blink, after it is done spitting codes out you can start the truck and see what the computer says then, to clear the computer, you start the KOEO test and just pull the switch to the HOLD position. or unplug the reader while it is giving codes.
