I want to change the the 4 speed out to a 5 speed. Does anyone know which year transmissions will fit this ? The emergency brake is NOT on the transmission. And will I need to make any modifications ? Thanks for any help as this is my first post and searches didn't really answer my question.
You will need to get a zf 5 speed from a truck that is roughly around 87 thru 96(some of the early powerstroke trannies will fit). You will also need to get the flywheel and clutch, and this can't be a powerstroke, it has to be from the older idi 7.3. You will find out these trannies had a special flywheel that was two pieces with clutches and springs, it's called a dual mass flywheel. If you want your truck to be quiet, you need to get one of these, but they wear out and are usually changed out with the clutch. The aftermarket has solid flywheel wheel conversions you can buy, but you will still get a little noise out of this system.
It should bolt in with little to no modifications elsewhere.
