Vehicle Speed Sensor/ Rear ABS Sensor
I just broke the plug that is mounted to the top of my rear differential off of my 96 EB Bronco. I posted my predicament here to no avail. I was told that this plug is the rear ABS sensor or the Vehicle Speed Sensor. With that in mind I found a local parts store that had them in stock. When I got there, upon comparison I found that something was wrong. The new sensors they were showing me were twice as big and had some sort of additional plug on it for something else. They were also metal and twice as long. My original consisited of a single plug with a inch long plastic thing that goes inside the diff. Can anyone tell me what this thing is? I tried to drive the truck with it broken and the ABS light comes on, the overdrive "off" light flashes and the truck doesn't shift out of first.

That's still the vehicle speed sensor you're dealing with; that's the only plastic thing that goes on the differential. If the parts house had something odd-looking, try your Ford dealer tomorrow; you're guaranteed to get the right part.
When I looked it up on AutoZone for you last night, there were several listed for your vehicle, and they were all different from the one I put on my '92. But they're still all vehicle speed sensors.
