I have a 1951 F-1 with a flat head six, three speed transmission that is a synchronized top loader. It seems to pop out of second gear a lot, and sometimes will stick in one gear. The shifter has a lot of play and will move right and left pretty far. Any suggestions?

You have what is called the 3-sp HD (heavy duty), assuming you have the original trans. In '51 the standard base model 3-sp was a column shifter. Neither had synchro 1st, tho. If yours has synchro 1st, it is some thing else completely.
In any case, they are quite easy to rebuild. Popping out of 2nd when coasting is usually a sign that the thrust washers are worn out, or the bearings are worn. As old as it is, a complete teardown and inspection is the best plan. I think that I have a 39 ford synchronized floor shift transmission. I looked on the upper portion that attaches to the bell housing and could not find a serial number for the trans. I was able to pull the cap off and pull out the shifter and place it back in the hole. The transmission worked for a short time, but will not shift into second once again. Is it true that the upper plate can be different , and it is possible that someone put the wrong plate and shifter in this transmission?
I think I found part of my problem with the shifter. It appears that the shifter rod and the housing has a pin that keeps the shifter rod in place, well during an inspection I realize that there is no pin. I will going to the hardware store tomorrow to get a drive pin!
