Hi,
Ill start with the basics first, I have a 96 F250 7.3 with the automatic e4od,
first off the previous owner had it rebuilt by aamco 40k miles ago, now im not a big aamco fan but ill go with what i can, a year or so ago it was having a shifting issue it was popping out of gear and then back in, I took it to aamco and they said the error code was a speed censor and they replaced it, so now a year later i load up the camper and head out and boom now im on the freeway and it pops into a netural state and im trying to manualy shift it back abd forth to get into gear finaly I get it into 1st gear and it wont shift up so I was playing with the OD button and poof it starts to go into other gears, and the OD light stops blinking, like it repaired itself. so I drove about 60 miles and got to my destination and bam a hard shift and now the light starts blinking again. so i did my camping and started back to home and it drove perfect, not 1 issue the only thing that i notice is it dont shift properly, its like it goes and then shifts to second then third and forth real fast. sorry for the long story but its the best way to explain this problem, has anyone had this issue before? or any suggestions?
Hmmm, I am sure that there will be others coming along shortly that will have more insight into your issue, but let me cover a couple questions I think they will have.
1) Have you checked the wiring connections on the side of the transmission?
2) Does your speedometer bounce at all when you're driving?
Another thing is that I would take it back to Aamco and have them read the codes. If the OD light was flashing there was a code in there and unless you have unhooked the battery, it is still there so they should be able to pull it for you. Also, doesn't Aamco have a warranty on their stuff? I thought they did and I wanted to say it was 2 years. If that's the case they should fix it for you...
Pull the vss and clean the end of it. Clean the mating surface where the vss sit on the rear end any rust or grim in between the vss an rear end will cause the air gap between the vss and tone ring to be greater than it should be and mess with its reading. Check wiring to the vss
When it stacks the shifts that is the trans in limp mode because of a failure in the system.the speedo is a great indication and vss is your problem.also check the range sensor for moisture in the connector back in the day we did hundreds at the dealership.
If it is old looking at all i would.it may keep u from being broke down with the camper.make sure u get motorcraft at least.weather from ford or a distributor.parts store junk is just not good enough.
