i know this is a silly question to you experienced machinics but it will help me.
what wrenches do you use to remove the tranny bell housing bolts going into the engine?
i have a 351m with c6 on a 77 f100.
i can figure this out once i get the truck up but then wouldn't be a good to go looking for tools.
i was thinking a 9/16" socket to a "6 wooble extention, to a 12" entention. is this what you use?
thanks!!
A C6 tranny is a bear to get out. The mechanic that pulled the C6 on my dad's truck has never pulled a tranny since - he hated it that much! Be careful!
My favorite tools for the bell housing bolts are a 1/2" drive impact gun with a 36" extension and a 3/8" drive swivel socket (the extension is 1/2" on one end and 3/8" on the other). I just drop the end of the trans down and stand behind the trans and gun the bolts out - easy. But I work at a shop and have access to a lift and specialty tools...
The easyest way i found to do the tranny ,is putting my engine hoist through the pasenger side door and runing a chain down through the floor shifter boot and wraping chain evenly around tranny, and t-case and putting just anough presure on chain to take out slack then take your crossmember out and then the bell bolt's and you will have the tranny ding dangling from a chain and then just lower it down with the engine hoist.make's it real easy to line up when putting it back together!just repeat that in reverse!I have a real bad back!!!work smart not hard!!!
The jack work's but you have to secure the tranny to it and then their's no movment of the tranny making it a tad harder to line back up,But when the tranny is hanging from a chain your hand's are free ,and the tranny move's oh so easy helping a real nice easy reinstall.set that baby down on a cart and roll it out from under the truck like it was 20lbs. just my 1/3 of a cent though, real bad back make's me think this way!
