I have a 2000 ranger 3.0,automatic 4x4.The truck will not go forward in drive 1 or in drive. If I start out in second gear it will shift through the other gears.Does anybody know what the problem is?
Did this start all of a sudden, has it been slipping, how is your trans fluid level? Does the fluid smell burnt and have a brownish color to it? It should be red in color and smell like oil. How many miles on your truck and when was the last trans fluid/filter change done?
The truck wasn't running when I bought it (bad starter)but I knew it might have an engine or transmission problem. The fluid is where it should be and is bright red and does not smell like it is burned.
At this point I would suggest you have a transmission shop diagnose the problem for you. It could be a blocked passage or stuck piston on the low band, or as mentioned a bad clutch pack.
I picked up a 2000 ranger 4.0 auto 4x4 a few weeks ago and the transmission stopped working. It goes into every gear easy but won't move? What could this be? I've been told the valve body gaskets? Any help would be great. Thanks!

Could be the torque converter, pump, or linkage inside broke or fell off.
