Stans Headers makes them for the 6.9/7.3 IDI's. I have been told that you can generate as much power as a turbo. But seeing how much power the turbo added, I find that hard to swallow.
i had that straight pipe put in for now 3" duals with the headers are in my plans. should i put any mufflers on at all? because if it sounds as good as the straight pipe there aint no way there goin on.any input is greatly appreciated.

Well no mufflers is going to lower the backpressure which equates to more power. Which is a good thing, but the loudness for my tastes is too much to handle. I have had a muffler fall off on me one before the turbo install, it was... well let me put it to you this way... too freakin loud for me to handle. I couldn't get the stereo loud enough. Now that I have a turbo I have straight pipe it's not bad until you get her under a load or hard accell, but pulling 9k up a grade gets on my ears, so it looks like I'm going back to a muffled system. I will work around the increased backpressure by just enlarging the diameter of the entire exhaust. I'm going with 3.5 front to rear with a muffler. Don't know which one yet, but something.
Well my only requirements for a muffler are free flowing and killing the sound. Don't care too much for the rapping sound at higher rpms or under load. I just want it quiet, I have not looked into mufflers yet, but I may end up putting my banks muffler back on here soon. It sounded pretty good, and the turbo whistle came through, not as much with the straight pipe I have now, but you could still tell it wasn't stock.
I don't think I could stand the loudness of a straight pipe I have 3 1/2 exhaust with a standard muffler and its loud enough you can't even sneak around a neighbourhood.
I do believe in opening up the exhaust but I don't think adding headers will make the same power as a turbo shoving air down the engines throat.
Hey Travis when did you get another project you better up date your sig on the other site
he he he... just about stole it. $300 and has a big ole list of brand spanking new parts that were replaced within the last 30k miles. All the important high priced stuff. I got my monies worth then some. I have pictures up over at the other site. She's a project truck, the body is rotting away pretty badly. I have areas that I can stick my fist through, but mechanically she a good one. So I'm going to do a body off restoration. It will be my sons truck when he turns 16. This way I can teach him mechanics first hand.
the straight pipe is fine at low rpm. just get her above 1400 and she sounds good.i'd like to stay away from turbo's, i like the n/a and i dont know why anyone says its gutless. go n/a's!!!!!!!!
If you got hills to climb man you need more power my 7.3 N/A is working over time to make my 7800lb M/T F-Superduty move its worse with a load on.
If I get another 7.3 IDI a turbo is going to be installed right now my truck gets 11mpg and its topped out at 44mph the only time I can go faster is down a hill in neutral.
I went from a 460 powered F-Superduty which was my previous truck it weighed 8300lbs M/T and it would have run circles around my current 7.3.
Everybody I talk to says get a turbo its like night and day I sure would like to try drive a turboed 7.3 to see if there is that much of a difference.

Have you driven a turbo'd IDI? The power level difference is astonishing. When I took mine for it's test drive after the turbo install, I was flat amazed. I left 4 nice black marks just out side my driveway in a 7klb dually with an auto. The only way I had even a chance of doing that before was to slam on the brakes in the hope that they would lock up. Now that I have increased the overall weight by adding more accessories, she will no longer lay rubber, but the accelleration is still there.
ive never driven one personally, but i'd put this truck up against a PS any day.the truck weighs 6400 lbs. and hauls ***. what do you guys think about swapping out the 4.11 for a 3.55?right now we are turning 2700 rpm at 60 mph, and we figure itll drop it to 2200-2300 with the 3.55.and another question. theoreticallyif i want to draw air from the inner fenderwell, its almost as good as from the front of the truck, right?
I wouldn't do that.....that's the dirtiest spot to draw air from, plus from the front you get some forced air involved...if you don't have a turbo.
Just my $.02
