Well started taking the front end off the Ex to see everything that Im going to have to replace. There is a black box that was dangling down after the inner fender well was removed that has 2 relays in it that I dont know what is. Also the inner fender, not the well itself but the half metal fender that the outer fender bolts too, I cant find a part # for it so if anyone knows what it is called please send me a line so I can get one. Here are some pics I have taken so far.
I am going to have to get another radiator support. Underneath where the header panel bolts up is all bent in from the fender caving under and the inner fender support is bowed a little bit, gonna try to straighten that but if not I found the part #'s for replacement. The one thing that Im going to have to just make do with is where the cowl bolts up is crinkled up, its in one of the pics just above the master cylinder, where the extra wires are bundled if you want to add something on. Im just going to wing that as long as I can get the cowl to bolt back down. Beyond that, a new fender, grille, lights, hood, bumper and brackets and call it good. Going to see about just taking a fender and hood to the body shop for paint and then me and my dad do all the assembly to save a few bucks but it might be easier to just drive the whole vehicle up there, just gotta see how its going I guess. Hopefully my check will arrive in the next couple of days so I can get the ball rolling on parts. Ive done alot of pricing on rockauto but dont know if aftermarket is the best for the fender and hood, may look at a couple of junkyards, just gotta see what all is out there. Found several places on ebay but everyones saying Im pretty much rolling dice with that. I do know that a hood and fender from ford (Tousley) is still almost 3-4 times what I can get one from rockauto and other places. It will probably be next weekend before I get to do anymore tearing into or stuff but Ill keep updating on parts and stuff. Im a 2nd shift guy so my work schedule is limiting on what I can do during the week but I gotta get this done asap to get the wife back on the road. Im also open to any suggestions or tips. I think we have decided with a chrome grille and have the upper valance on the front bumper painted black instead of the beige and run harley lights.
Well I stopped by the salvage yard yesterday and got lucky. They had just brought in an 06 from a theft recovery and I was able to get the hood (with hinges), front fender (with inner wheel liner) and complete front bumper (with mounting brackets and foglights) along with the 2 plastic cowl pieces for $500 even. Going back monday to get the inner fender support and drivers side part of the radiator support bracket where the headlight is recessed from the header panel for 100. Also they are ordering me a new 05 header panel for 75 bucks plus they have an 05 grill that they are letting me have for 50. My windshield wiper was loose but dont know if it was from the accident but I am getting the whole wiper assembly for 75. My new Harley headlights with harnesses arrived via fed ex yesterday. All I need to have done is have the hood, upper bumper pad and fender along with the outer fender trim painted and should be good to go. My fender trim has a couple of gouges in it from the impact but my dad and I are going to try to fill up and sand down those gouges and hopefully have it looking good, had rather try to fix that then spend the enormous amount that it costs just for that plastic piece. Here are a few more pics. The bumper is just loose on there so we could see how the brackets would line up, come to find out the two that I didnt think would line up that I saw in another post lined up perfect. The bumper was complete but in the pics it is tore down so I could send the top piece off to paint plus I have since cleaned it and got it somewhat shiny. So far total parts including what I will pick up Monday comes to $970. Not bad at all in my book. I dont know what the paint job will cost but with me taking the loose parts to them to prep and paint and me put it on I cant really see over 500, could be wrong but if I am I cant see it being much over if any and I think Im shooting high on the 500 amount. I will have to buy 3 new tires to match the one that we replaced which will set me back around 600 or so.
Even though the 06 bumper has the fogs, the lenses on the ones on my x are in better shape so I may steal your idea and make mine work. We spent most the day working on the fender trim piece filling in the qouges and cuts in it and sanding it down, im not overly picky on if it doesn't come out 100%, I just can't see paying the high price for a piece of plastic if I can make mine work. Gonna call the body shop tomorrow to see about getting the hood, fender, bumper pad and trim piece painted. Also gonna swing by the salvage yard again to pickup the header panel, grille, wiper motor and the inner fender part that the fender bolts to along with the sheet metal piece it attaches to that the drivers side of the header panel hooks to. Hopefully over the next weekend can start putting the rest of the puzzle together.
We actually did try swapping the lights between housings but apparently the arms on the lights themselves that the push pins go through are a different length and I couldnt get them to align back up straight, if you went to mount them they were pointing up at a slight angle instead of straight out so I put them back. Another thing I noticed between the 01 and 06 fogs is that my 01 fogs have like a square box that the bulb is surrounded by that isnt in the 06 lights or on the fog lights on my 05 F250. We plugged one of each up at the same time to see if there was a difference and even though they both shined equally bright, the 01's seemed to shine more straight forward so Im guess that little box thing that surrounds the bulb acts like a projector of sorts to direct the beam straight out. Dunno just my interpretation.
I like interchangeable parts and wish the vehicle manufactures would do it more. Like years ago when everything fit everything else. If it was a chevy part it would work on pretty much any chevy vehicle. Honda is the same way.
Well got my parts back from paint yesterday so today we got to start putting stuff back on. We have a few small alignment issues to overcome but nothing that is a deal breaker. Total for everything I had to buy plus the painting of the hood, fender, upper bumper pad and fender trim piece comes to a grand total of $1840 bucks. I think the painting the above items was a tad high coming in at 900 bucks but again I havent had to have anything painted in a long time. They had the raw parts so nothing had to be taped off but oh well, had to have it. The fender is still giving us a few small issues but I think with a little shimming that will be good to go. We have to do some more hood alignment and lowering the hood latch a little but it will all come in to place. Here is some pics of where we are at. Now take note that the drivers side headlight is not in for good just yet, just wanted to see how it would look. While I was finishing up getting parts at the salvage yard the other day I seen that the donor truck had some chrome tow hooks, nobody had dibs so scored em for 20 bucks. Im going to have to do alot of cleaning to get the older paint to shine like the new paint but its going to look good *fingers crossed*. Well enjoy the photos.
