Cooling fan removal

What's the trick? I know it is standard thread.....lefty loosey. But I can't find a way to hold the water pump pulley still to get the fan to unscrew from it. The blet won't hold it tight enough. I tried wedging a screwdriver under a bolt on the pulley to use that as reverse leverage but this fan won't budge. Autozone doesn't have any sort of specialized tool for this either.

Anyone have any advice?

Also, I can't figure out exactly how the fan shroud sits in there. I am not finding any bolts or clips that secure it other than the lip of the beauty cover thing that goes from the radiator support up to the grill on top.

What am I missing here?

Sorry bout that.

2001 XLT with the 4.6 in it.

I found the bolts for the fan shroud. The problem was they were out in the open and in my face so I missed them. I can't do anything with it of course until I can figure out how to get this fan off.

And the petcock to drain the radiator is something I have never seen before too. What's the trick for popping that to drain the radiator?

I did some searching online, and I read a thread where a person used "a 14" pipe wrench to hold two of the fan clutch pulley nuts and then used a 12" adjustable wrench on the big nut to remove the fan clutch."

I also read that the threads should be conventional: right-tight, left-loose.

Worst situation, you rent the tool but that should hopefully give you some ideas. I've never removed mine but I might as I am contemplating a dual electric fan swap.

I didn't know if there was a tool for this or not. I checked at Autozone but they had nothing. I'll check with a couple of others here locally. I can envision what would work...I"m hoping someone else did the same and made it.

I was trying to turn it counter clockwise which is what I had found too.

I've used both a strap wrench and a chain wrench on the pulley to hold it. Either tool works great and does not do any damage.

I have removed a few of these with a adjustable wrench and a good smack from a hammer. Just watch your swing. I'm considering a electric fan swap as well and would like to know (since were on the subject), what a good kit is if there are kits available.

The strap wrench worked like a charm. Thanks for that alloro!

I talked with a Ford master mechanic tonight. The trick they use is, before pulling the belt, they smack the stem(I don't know what else to call it) with a hammer and chisel in a counter clockwise direction and that dead blow normally breaks the fan free to then twist off. I have already pulled a lot of the front off so that wasn't an option for me.

Oh, and the petcock is just a plastic nut you unscrew like normal to drain the radiator. There is supposed to be a 7 mm allen head bolt in the center of it you can use if the plastic tries to come apart. I was able to just use a pair of pliers on the plastic nut to loosen it and drain the system.

Alloro, can u help me out here?? 99 Navi, trying to get that dadgum fan clutch nut off...tried the "special tool" from advance auto...dind't work. Bought rubber pulley holder...it slips. I held 2 nut with channel locks and used an 18" adjustable wrench, pulled so hard I almost passed out. Yes, lefty loosey. Any other hints, tips or suggestions. Thx

I tried putting an 8" C clamp on the pulley and letting it hold back on the alternator pulley...that went over like a turd in a punch bowl!! Don't know what to do next, I am at a stand still???
