voltage regulator hook up

i'am working on my old boat , it has a ford 302 , ya i said boat ,
the alternator seems good but is not charging the batteries.

I put in a new voltage regulator and it smoked right away.
-
I wonder what is going wrong ?
Does anyone know what the letters on the regulator stand for and where they are to go ?

any one now of a charging circuit diagram i could download for an older ford , early 70's

I = indicator
A = A+ = hot battery supply
S = Switched power
F = Field
