Mysterious Vibration

2005 E350 standard length, V-10, TorquShift, 3.73 Full Float

I have been chasing a vibration above 65 mph and running out of options. The vibration is there either towing or empty. I feel the vibration in my feet and seat and on occasion in the steering wheel. Here is a list of things that have been addressed.

Tires - Multiple sets
Wheels - Multiple sets
Alignment
Rear axle assembly - changed
Balance - Std, Road force,Finger adapter, balance beads and Centramatic wheel balancers
Drive Shaft Balance
Drive Shaft harmonic balancer
U joints

The engine and transmission do not appear to be vibrating much as noted with the dog house off. Motor and transmission mounts seem fine.

So, I have noticed some play at the Yoke to the transmission and am wondering if there is a bushing in the rear transmission housing like I have read about in older models. I have read that any play in the Yoke is bad. My '97 van with a 4EOD has a little play but not as much as the '05.

Anyone with any experience with Yoke play and vibration?

i got the same think its not really bad and it is at the same speed 65 its the worst and then its just a lil vibration but i can feel at the 65, and i do the same think balance the wheels drive shaft , i got wheel spacers but its not a problem i took them off and still same think, i got oversized wheels but i changed to stock ones same think so i need some ideas guys also, and my van is 05 too but e-150, if you find out what is that shaking let me know i will keep my eye on this post thx

I noticed a similar vibration just in the last week or so, after I removed the third row bench. Happens at 50-60 mph, worst at 55. In 3rd or OD, TCC locked up or not, under load, goes away when I lift off gas. The van has only 28k on the odo.
2008 E-150 (8 lug) 5.4, 4R70W, 3.55 D60 semi-float.
I jacked the rear off the ground, all I noticed was some excess play in the tail bushing/yoke fit. Planning to replace the tail bushing/seal and see if that helps.

I got the 55mph vibration before but after checking in auto shop problem was drive shaft they removed the OEM balances of and they balanced again and the 55mph vibration is gone im preety sure its a different vibration but let us kow when you change te yoke, i got loose somwhere i think and its had to explain to you guys ( and im not perfect in english ) mine vibration can be connected with loose when i stop at th light or stop when im driving ( not every stop ) i can hear like loose small bang from the lets say "back" it sounds like after transmision to the back, and this is like when i stop and i holding the foot on the brake then car stops and it is bang then or when i realise the brake bedal and then its bang and you can feel it is because some loos, strange and i cant located the "problem" i change lots of thinks on my way and nothing its still there but im driving my 05 e-150 like 3 years and its still the same way its nothing worst or better so thats why i think it can be connected with this vibrations, thx

I got to replacing the bushing and seal on Friday, and after driving a few times the vibration at 50 to 60 mph is gone. The vibration wasn't real bad to begin with, just annoying, but seamed to be getting worse and I noticed about 3/32's side play at the yoke. The bushing that I removed did not look bad to me, but with a new one the play was more like 1/32.

Did you replace the bushing yourself? If so, could you explain the procedure? I see that there are some special tools made for removal and install. Are they actuall needed?

Good job now im looking to fix mine but whitch bushing did you replace where was located? Maybe you have some part number please explain the process of changing thank you

Yes I did it myself, I am a mechanic. I was able to do it at work on a lift, but it can be done just as easily on the ground. There may be some special puller and driver tools that would make the job much simpler because with these tools there is no need to remove the extension housing. I have two of these "universal" tools, a large one and a small one, unfortunately neither was the correct diameter for my 4R70W bushing. (1.6 inches).
So the job goes like this, block front wheels from moving, trans in neutral, unbolt drive shaft, jack rear wheel of ground so you can rotate shaft to access all 4 bolts, place pan under rear of trans to contain ATF, remove drive shaft (check universal joints), with chisel or beater screw driver hammer in the edge of the rear seal (do not gouge ext housing) and pry out seal while housing is attached to trans, remove 2 trans mount nuts from under cross member, move jack from rear axle to transmission pan and with a block of wood across the full width of the pan raise trans up off cross member, remove 2 trans mount bolts from ext housing and remove mount, unbolt ext housing from trans case, NOTE: (you will lose about a quart of fluid here and it will run down the lip of the cross member missing the drain pan, if your drive way is nice make sure not to do this while your wife is in the area) SUB-NOTE: (Ford extension housing bolts have a loc-tite compound on them and combined with corrosion can lead to bolts breaking off in the case, heat them if necessary, do not break them!)
OK the housing is off, remove the old gasket, If you have the correct size driver you may drive out the worn bushing and install the replacement bushing and seal, otherwise buy a case of beer or soda and take it to a trans shop and come back later when they have had time to install the new bushing and seal for you, make sure the drive shaft yoke fits smoothly into the new bushing before putting it all back together in the reverse order. Don't forget to check the fluid when done.
That's it, parts needed: extension housing gasket, extension housing bushing and rear seal, specified ATF. Whether you have an AOD, 4R70W, E4OD or a Torqueshift, the job is the same only the parts are different.

I am getting ready to replace this bushing. I am a fairly skilled DIYer but mostly work on BMW's. I ordered the removal and install tools from Ebay so that I don't have to remove the extension housing. My problem now is where to get the bushing. The local dealer states that Ford does not offer just the bushing but only the entire housing. The Ford Tech the parts guy asked about it said that he used to get some bushings from Aamco but they are no longer around in my town. So, where do I pick up the bushing?

when i did it on my c6, i just walked into the local tranny shop (old independent shop) and asked him for the bushing and seal. he walked around a shelf unit and handed them to me. i suspect he would have much the same response for your tranny.

Ya I don't know why they don't have a link to local stores. The site is in Kentucky and I have one in St. Louis and I know they have local stores in other states.

I can't seem to find the bushing on the website. It is starting to make be believe that one does not exist. There is a tool specifically for it's repleacement but can't find the bushing.

HELP!

One thing I didn't see on your list was ball joints, don't assume the alignment guys checked them. Had a similar vibration brought it to the same shop 4 times was caught on the 5th time at a different shop.
