In a recent thread from 2010, a discussion mentioned that DP Tuners had applied for the CARB EO approval for the state of California and that these tuners were legal until July 1, 2011. I do not see on the DP Tuner site any mention of further updates and I am wondering what others in the state are doing when it comes to smog testing. I had mine tested last year so I am good until Jan 2014 but I am looking into a DP Tuner for the highway and high idle tunes. I know Banks has Cali compliant tuners but they don’t have the same features that I am looking for. I still don’t know how I am going to get around my FRx or the AIH delete but I will have to cross that bridge when I get to it.<O</O
lol, i got til the end of this month to smog mine. I used the FRx to "feed" my veggie oil, and my AIH, i got the diode installed. I'm hoping, that since my truck CAME from a smog test only shop owner, that they turn a blindeye and "pass" me along...
I would just like to find a good place for the smog check were the individual knows what an FRx is and understands that it has nothing to do with increased emissions. I live in the high desert which is the last place on earth one may need an air in-line heater but it is what it is
When I had my inspection, the guy looked under the hood and said my air intake may be an issue. He then plugged in his computer and went back in his office to look up my intake. After a few minutes, he came out of the office with a printout that allowed my intake, he looked at the computer screen and unplugged my truck and that was it. They did not even step on the accelerator or nothing. I would like to stay legal and I’m not sure if DP is still accepted. If I do have a DP in stock setting, would that be sufficient. I am not looking for massive HP mods, just some better highway numbers and an increase idle for when I am running my welder or stopped on the road in the winter for a road closure so I can fluctuate the RPMs.
Yes we did not pursue the EO number. After considering what they wanted us to do it would be just as easy for our customers to just pull the chip out. The tunes they wanted us to do were nothing more than stock. It was going to be a total waste of time and money. Everytime we talked to them they changed their minds.

“Every time we talked to them they changed their minds” now that sounds like California. I am glad you took the time to chime in. I spoke earlier to “Stewart_H” on the phone and he gave me some good ideas to follow up on. I have limited exposure with tuners as I have always left this part of the “mods” alone as I did not feel the need for them. Now I am looking at idle, tow and highway tunes as I drive 100 miles to get to civilization these days. I need to do some more research and find out what exactly is involved with “just pulling the chip out” and other ways to effectively manage this item while living in CA.
I just got mine renewal and have to smog mine also. It passed the first time because they where all exempt so to say. This time I mit have to take mine off also. I like my DP tuner, and wouldn't like driving the truck with out it. Let us know how you do,
My successful CA smog strategy: I use the DP tuner switch that hangs on the A pillar, so I switch to stock tune, put the mount in the glove box, and stash the switch inside the vent cover on the side of the dash. Gotta turn it just right to fit. I sprayed WD40 on the AIH and the few visible bits of the IC then blew some dust on. The FRx got some plain black wire loom on the ss hoses and black felt tip pen hides the RiffRaff logo. The "Powerstroke" cover hides it pretty well too. I left the 6637 on since I knew it was legal, but I had to convince the tech. That was the only item the tech noticed. Another reason to get an AIS, looks stock. No smoke on the snap test, passed visual, and got my tags.
Cant find the pics. Its in where the cigarette lighter goes. I'm looking for the actual lighter portion (the piece that you push in) and gonna make that into a **** instead of the normal TS chip ****, that way it will be completely stealth.
(If anyone has one of those pop out lighter things that they dont need, let me know)
Thank you all for the input. I need to find some data on how these tunes function. I know the system has a list of tunes such as 60hp econo daily driving and 60hp econo mountain daily driving but are there any more specifics than that? I don’t have a DP yet so for the ones that do, is there some sort of manual that accompanies the product that provides further detail on how these specific tunes work and when they should be utilized. I have visions of myself playing a never-ending game of “whack a mole” with the buttons as the conditions of the road change and I change the tuner to fit the terrain.
