Question Exhaust

Since i am getting no responce from the 6.0 forum i figured that i would ask the guys that my have been around longer with the 7.3.

This is what i did, i pulled out the muffler to see if i could get used to the sound of a straight pipe and also to see if it would increase power. Normally on a N/A car you would feel a slight gain in hp but i think with the turbo i actually lost power. Or is the extra noise playing games with my head. Do i need that back pressure to help the turbo spool up???

Please Help!!

You'll get enough back pressure from the turbo. From the turbo on out, bigger is better.

So how does a 6.0 sound with a straight pipe? I haven't heard one yet. I have a 7.3 with a straight and I think it sounds a lot like a big block gasser with a glass pack.

It sounds good the cat keeps it quiet enough. I love the turbo whine through the exhaust it hard to have good gas milage when you always want to step on it!!

Me too. I hear lots of folks complaining about flutter with the straight pipe, but all I hear is hot rod diesel.

I agree with alanscott , the turbo is all the backpressure you need on a turbo application. Untill I can shell out the cash for a full exhaust , I installed a exhaust cutout , right after the downpipe , which I can open at will with three wingnuts.
I usually open it up when I tow anything , to try and keep my EGT's down , then I can just close it up when i want to go to "stealth" mode , well , as stealth as a Powerstroke can be

I just bought a 02 PSD, and was wondering about the cutting out the muffler. Did you just go to a muffler shop and tell them what you wanted, and does it void the warranty?

thanx

The dealer HAS to prove that any mod to the truck caused the specific issue at hand. Removing the muffler from the truck will not do anything to the condition of the truck itself , except make more noise , which is a good thing

Talking Exhaust

hey guys......i just bought a 03 250 psd cc ....... w/ the 7.3 i had the muffler chopped off and it sounds great. before i did this, i went back to the dealership and asked if this would void the warranty. they said yes but i had to ask how?? i told them that how would the exhaust provoke a problem in the engine. when it was over and done, we had called the truck building plant in virginia and talked to a tech. and the tech stated that it would not void nor injure the engine...... strike one up for us noise makers!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Guy's,
I have an 02' PSD with a straight 4" SST exhaust turned down between the cab and the diff. Sounds like a big block hod rod with headers. No more flutter noise.
I had a stock exhaust with no muffler two weeks after my purchase of the truck one year ago. Had the dealer remove it. I did have the turbo flutter until I installed the 4" sst.

Just my .02

where di you get your setup? Did you buy it without the muffler? Did it come with the turn down? I have the monster exhaust and was thinking of modifying it with a turndown and no muffler. Will i have flutter and where can you buy the turndown?

Exhaust

I am alittle confused here, happes once in awhile

So , If I did a large exhaust , say 4 or 5 inch , with no muffler , and did a straight turn down to the street , their would be no flutter at all ?? The "flutter" I had with the stock muffler removed is what made me put a flowmaster in it's place.

The flutter noise is diminished. It is loud though. Sounds like a big block with open headers complemented by the turbo whistle. I like it!
I purchased the 4" SST exhaust from HOG Performance. It consists of a two piece down pipe, straight pipe past the cab (between the cab & diff), with a polished turn-down tip, all stainless clamps and hardware. Looks nice under the truck.
It's been a week since the installation and the wife is getting use to the sound.
Keep in mind, I didn't do this for the noise as much as I did for the improved exhaust flow and lower exhaust temps.

A loud exhaust is fine with me , the louder the better. I am running 2 1/2 inch headers into 4'' collectors into dual 4'' exhaust on my Nova , lots of noise regulation tickets from the cops , but i still love the sound.

Thanks for the "no more flutter" idea

Joeboost,

I followed my wife last evening to get a better ear on the true exhaust sound of my 4" staright pipe, and I will have to say, there is a suddle flutter. It's suddle enough for me to leave it straight.

P.S. The sound will change when I chip it again.
