which oil ???

Hi All,

2012 F150 FX4, 5.0 3.73's. Love the truck. Now has 4000 miles and going to change oil. I used the Ford Syn-blend in my 01 4x4 for 165,000 miles with no issues at all. Is it good for the new 5.0 or should I use Mobil 1 5w20 pure sympatheic oil?

Thanks, Byron

IMO - your question depends on how frequently you want to do oil changes. If you want extended OCI (oil change intervals - 10K miles) use Mobil-1 or Penzoil Platinum. If you're okay with the 5-7K interval, use regular DINO oil.

In my experience, and this means years of actual oil analysis from Blackstone Labs on my vehicles, there is no difference in "quality" of oil when comparing full synthetc to regular blend oil. The difference is OCI's only.

There is a difference - resistance to heat before coking starts. This is especially important in some turbo charged engines.

oil change intervals

On my old 2001 4x4 5.4, I changed oil every 3000 miles, religously. Used Ford bottled Syn-Blend. Never a problem. On this truck I thought about going 6000 miles.

On this truck, Ford says you can extend your drain interval up to 10K miles in a "non severe duty" environment using MC 5W-20 syn blend.

While I don't intend to run my oil for 10K but rather 6500-7500 miles, I wouldn't spend the money on a high dollar full syn oil either.

Then again, peace of mind is priceless.

if it were my truck, i would use motorcraft oil syn blend (or trop artic same thing different bottle) of the specified weight, and follow the Intellegent Oil Life Monitor.

my best attempts at researching the IOLM indicates that a lot of thought went into it and it monitors the acutal use that the vehilce sees to recommend the oil change interval, and has a built in factor of safety, so i belive it is good enough to follow.

i like the motorcraft/trop artic oil because it is a synthetic blend and it is one of the cheaper oils on the shelf, plus it has the Motorcraft name to boot. i use motorcraft filters as well.

Thanks to everyone who responded and thank you to those who have and do serve today!

I think I will go with the Ford bottled Syn-blend and I just can't go any more than 5K miles.

Thanks again !!

Oil change interval is dependent on the type of driving you do. If you run all highway and do not tow, I could see you easily running 10,000 miles without doing any harm to the engine. If you do mixed city highway and 20 miles or greater per trip, I would recommend 5,000 to 7,000 mile intervals. All city short hop driving, I would change every 3,000 to 4,000 miles. Same if you are towing heavy or operating under severe conditions. I currently run 5000 miles per oil change. My driving is 20 miles of highway each way to and from work with 200 miles a month of city driving. Never had a problem on any of our Fords. I run MC 5w20 synthetic blend and MC filters on all the Fords. Both the Taurus and Sable have over 100,000 miles and neither use oil. The truck has 50,000 miles on it and it does not consume oil either.

I use Mobil 1 Full Synthetic and I change about every 3 to 4 thousand miles. I don't drive that often usually into town on my days off. Or pulling the boat or snowmobile trailer. I only have 15,000 miles on my truck in 2 years.

so, i'm just curious ....

how many of you who change your engine oil more frequently than recommended by the manufacturer also change the trasmission oil, transfer case oil, differential oil, and coolant more often than recommended?

just seems odd to me, that people are so fastidious about changing engine oil and much more frequently than recommended, but often times neglect to follow the minimums for the rest of the vehicle.

how many even know what they are?

In my mind full synthetic oils allow you to not change the oil as frequently due to their synthetic composition. In the past I would easily put on a couple thousand more miles on full synthetic oils.

Seriously - you're throwing away quite a bit of money with that OCI. Under fairly normal conditions, you should easily be able to go 8-10K miles on full synthetic.

I have to say... read the manual. For my 5.4 liter motor, Ford specs a semi-synthetic oil that meets their lubrication specification for gas engines at minimum. I wouldn't go as far as to say DINO-oil is ok if you're still under warranty, ford may be spec'ing a semi-synethetic for the new 5.0 as well. If there's no mention of semi-synthetic blend or better, you can get away with DINO oil. Just make sure your oil conforms to Ford's spec so you don't have warranty issues.

When I was new to hot rodding I was all in to details like what is the perfect oil, perfect air filter, perfect tire, and stuff like that. One time I was asking a family friend what is the best oil for my engine and he said,

"QwkTrip [well, not exactly like that], did you put oil in your engine?"
I said, yes.
And he said, "Good, you're not as dumb as you seem."

And I've always put oil in my engines since then.

The point is, make sure your oil is in good condition and use an oil that meets the specifications in your owner manual. Even if you don't accumulate many miles it is still a good idea to change oil on a time interval, which is also in your owner manual. The reason being is cars that sit a lot get water condensation that mixes with oil and forms acids. I don't think the oil life monitoring system takes into account the "storage time" and temperature changes when key is off. You have to do that yourself.
