I just picked up a 2012 5.0 4X4 Scab. I'm going with 10,000 miles, or earlier if the oil monitor thingie tells me to change it. I'm not towing anything with it; it's a daily driver. Quick little thing too...compared to the 6.4l SuperDuty I just got rid of.
A question I have about these long oil change intervels based on the oil life gauge, has to do with dirt in the oil. German cars have very good air and oil filtration systems, and that helps keep the oil cleaner. American made cars don't specifty as good a quality of filters.
My Audi has an oil filter that is huge, at least 3 times bigger then any oil filter I've ever used, and sells at the dealer for $50. And the air filters are German made, also retail nearly that much. This system is designed to keep the engine very clean.
Living in dry environments, like much of the country now, you've got more dust in the air, at least in the summer. I just don't see the Ford filters doing the same job as the German products, and oil life is just one part of the equation in determining when to change the oil.
To me, dirty oil is the problem to be concerned about, not worn out oil.
