Fuel delivery?

I took my truck for a road test after 3 years of restoring it. It ran fine for a few miles and then started acting like it was running out of fuel. New tank, sending unit and pump. I only put around 5 gallons in it, it should pick up pretty much all whats in tank right? Only thing I might have wrong is I have a no emssions tank and Im not sure if its a vented cap or not? Its ran fine around the yard and driveway, thats why iam thinkin I have wrong cap and its vapor locking?

if that was true then all you'd have to do is drive around with the fuel cap and the problem would be solved. My experience has been that 5 gallons in an empty tank will run dry pretty quickly. the tank is flat on the bottom so its not like a newer vehicle with a sump and a pump that will suck the tank dry, it takes a couple gallons of fuel just to get to cover the pick up on our trucks.

Thanks hateranger thats what I was thinking but wasnt to sure. I think I will fill it up and put new filters on it and try it again. The fuel gauge was reading about a 1/4 but how accurate is the stock gauge?

not that accurate... I've put 5 gallons in mine, drove a very small amount, and parked on the tiniest bit of a hill, and then had to add fuel to get it to stay running before I could move it again...

thats from a completely empty tank btw.

If you add fuel and you experience those symptoms again, try opening the fuel cap. If its vapor lock you should hear it sucking in as the seal is breached, and the problem will stop as long as the cap is off.

A problem I and other have had is old weak sections of rubber line getting soft and sucked shut by the fuel pump. It can act like its out of gas with a full tank. Doubt that's the problem in your case but I mention it FYI.
