Oil Weights

Just got an 06 F150 with 5.4 engine. Do these trucks favor any particular engine oil weight? I live in south Georgia and it's rather warm down here.

Yep, it does, but that don't mean that's what everybody uses. I would think that geograhic location, temperature, etc., would have a bearing on what one should use, wouldn't it? Or does Ford restrict everyone to just one oil weight?

The owner's manual may say 5w-30 if you are over 80 degrees all the time or some such. Most I've seen here will say to stay with what Ford recommended--they built and warranteed the motor, and lots of motors seem to go well into the 200k mile catagory using what Ford recommends. My '98 Exploder and '01 Lexus have 100k each with the recommended 5w-30, no oil use in either one.

5w-20 semi-syn blend will be fine. I run a full syn due to my short commutes and style of driving. I also shorten my change intervals due to the same.

Have you done any UOA's? Conventional oil is really quality stuff now days. If you are running a short interval on synthetic you may just be wasting money. You may have alot more miles left in that synthetic or may be able to do the same amount of miles on a name brand conventional and save some money that way. You are definitely not doing any harm with the way you are servicing your truck now it's just something to think about.

I may start a war here but I feel if you stick with 5w20, 5w30 or even 10w30 you should be just fine. 15w40 would make me a little nervous any place that has a winter. It might cause some additional wear at start-up or it might not. Personally I wouldn't risk it. I know of a few people that run 5w30 or 10w30 in these trucks just to keep all their vehicles on the same oil. I am not saying they are better than 5w20 but none of them have had any problems.

Been in this forum and many other over the years and I have never seen an oil related engine failure. Just change it and the filter regularly and you'll be good.

My father in law runs rotela t 15/40 (yes it's diesel oil) for 10,000 miles. I think he's insane. I run strictly 5-20 full synthetic due to hard driving and long haul trips. His truck runs just fine.

I run 5-30 mobile 1 in the summer 70-110 deg f and the 5-20 motorcraft in the winter -10 to about 70 deg f. If I run the 5-20 in 100+ while towing when I stop I can hear my lifters or phasers tick and I only have 60,000mi on my truck so no thanks ford Ill go with 5-30.

Run a good synthetic oil (vis as per manual) and you are good at any temp.
castrol,mobil,motorcraft are near the top on most of the high heat,pressure,,tests I've seen.... a race oil test showed underpressure,,regular oil failing 15-20% below syn.,,,and high temp. fail 10-15% below syn.

example,,,my 92(regular oil,every 3000) valve cover removed at 100 000, had sludge,,,,my98(syn. oil,every 4500) cover removed at 160000miles no sludge .
I noticed no diff. between 5w30 and 5w20 in my 2004;

If you don't work your truck at all,,any kind of good oil will get you to 140 000+miles with regular oil changes

I tow with my truck and at 112k when I replaced the phasers and all that good stuff no sludge inside. That was on 3k mile intervals with conventional. I now do 5k on conventional. I really don't have short trips though. I live 9 miles from town so if the truck starts it goes at least 9 miles.
