Valve Lash

After my partial rebuild, I put my 292 back together. My manual says to set the valve lash at .019 but I think (not that I claim to know anything) the push rod gap may be a bit too much. The engine does sound a bit noisy too. It could be my imagination though.

Could I adjust the valve lash to .008 without any damage other than increasing my chance for a burnt valve?

Did you cut the valve stem heads in the rebuild?

I would not reduce the lash.

The rocker arm develops a wear pocket where it contacts the valve stem, thus using a flat feeler guage you get 019 on the edges, but where the contact is, the clearance is more. If you can get a round feeler guage, you can get a more precise setting.
