I was just playing around with my brothers '73 Ranchero front disc brakes. They almost bolt straight on. I just need to make a spacer and get a bushing. Volia instant 11" rotors. I just wondering if anyone knows what calipers they use in the kits. Now this would be a cool article. Up here in Canada it would cost me $700 for the kit. It doesn't include the calpiers either and probally not any bearings. I would use the original calipers but it would be too hard to make a bracket.
Sounds like another tech project in the works. If you can get that information together, it would be a big help to guys who want to retain their straight axle but have discs. Heck, you could probably even sell the brackets on the internet. I hear opportunity knocking!
But I'm a long way from that. I hope to get the frame welded today. But it has the 4 1/2 bolt circle I hope I could have it redrilled to 5 1/2. Does anyone know what calipers they use in those kits?
I'd go straight to the horse's mouth: my local Ford dealer and ask them what calipers the '73 Ranchero uses. If that doesn't work, let me know and I'll see what info I can dig up at the local parts stores for (same).
BTW, awesome find: hope it works it out for you. What a great "chance occurance" to find that the Ranchero disc brakes work on your ride! I love it when things like this happen!
51 dueler,
I just called about the calipers for a '73 Ford Ranchero. A local parts shop (Auto Zone) is asking $40 ea (without a core), and it takes 2-3 days to get.
I also have one other parts supplier to check out. They get EVERYTHING! Prices are pretty good, too. Lots of stuff either IN STOCK or at their local warehouse(= 1 day turn-around).
Let me know if I can help. I could pick up a set of calipers, mail them to you, and you could reimburse me, if that helps?
We used an ECI kit and it uses 73-76 big GM calipers. You can get the basic kit for about $150 with brackets, and bushings, Then you can chase down the oiher parts. I got the complete kit and it was a straight bolt in, it took longer to put on new brake lines than anything else.
I would use the original calipers but one bolt faces the front of the vehicle and the other faces the passenger side. So it would be hard to make a bracket that would fit and the calipers are rather bulky. In the articles they use calipers that are held on by two bolts and they are on the same side. I wont get around to doing this since I need to paint the frame and get some more parts. Also the number 1 problem is MONEY. Something I don't have right now. Thanks for the help. I guess I should look at my friends 70's Chevy car that they have sitting on blocks in the field.
