Got this '70 F100 yesterday for $300.Motor,a 302,does turn over but needs a carb rebuild.Previous owner said the trans,a C4,was toast.Body is really straight.Bed has alot of rusted thru holes in.Plans are to first just get it running then slowly custom it as money becomes available.
This is my first Ford and I know nothing about them.I have a '60 chevy that I was doin a frame off resto that is now being parted out to fund this project.Hopin to learn alot from y'all

Assuming the PO is correct and the trans is wasted I would not waste my time on an engine that does not run. You can pickup an engine trans combo pretty easily. That would solve your engine trans problem. Then its a matter of locating a bed. I think you are going to find more rust problems than you currently think you have. That is my thoughts.
For $300 you can't go wrong. they go across the scales for more than that. (scrap iron) And you'll gain a lot of experience just like you did on the 60 chev.

I thought the same thing. If I can't get it going then I'll scrap it.It had a hay spear and electric winch in the bed and I have already sold that so I have made a lil bit of money back.

I am going to fix the carb and see if it starts then.I have a neighbor that has built a few rods in his lifetime and he helps when I have problems.SO only money I will be out is in the carb kit.Best of all his knowledge is free.I do the work as he stands by and tells me what to do.Great learning experiance.

I would run a compression check on the cyls before I spent a penny on that engine. It is old & if the trans is shot ... It is most likely a C6 & not a C4 in a pickup. Unless you have been under it & positively made id I would not assume it a C4. The C6 is almost bullet proof. The engine is the weak link in a 302/C6 combo. On the other hand if you do not know how to rebuild a carb it would be good experience for you, maybe. So you rebuild the carb & it doesn't start. Did you make a mistake or is it something else?
If you are going to rebuild the carb I would pull the tank & flush it out. Old trucks that sit build up rust in the tanks. You could clog a fresh carb in a second if the tank is full of crud. Be sure to blow the fuel line out as well. I would also verify I am pumping fuel before I spent money/effort on the carb. I would also verify I had spark. I would check slop in the timing chain. All of these things can be done for no money & increase your knowledge about what you are playing with.
If you do decide to scrap it pull the hood if it is good. They do not reproduce that hood & plenty of guys here would be more than interested in it. The dash pad would be another item if it is good.
That is one of the easiest carbs to rebuild. It might just need cleaned up. If you can get it apart without ruining the gasket, just do a good clean up and put it back together and you should be good to go.
