Just purchased my first vintage truck. 1969 Ford F-100 Custom Ranger (SWB). The transmission was changed to an automatic. It has floor shift but, no reverse lock. Don't really know what to look for. Need Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well, not really sure what you need. Are you talking about a "reverse Lockout" so you can not accidentally push it too far foward?
What kind of shift do you have? Aftermarket? or stock version of something? Most aftermarkets DO have a lockout because most are used in race formats that require it. Most stock variations also have it. Most all make you push a button or hold a lever to make it past Drive into Reverse. Maybe it was broken or just removed?
A lot of automatic Ford trucks do not have reverse lockouts (D to R just by pushing the handle). I *think* this did not change until the late 80s/EAOD. My 1986 BII AT did not have a lockout. It would be interesting to know when they changed.
Thats the problem with most "cheap" aftermarket floor shifters like that. They may have small detents, but no real stops.
As a suggestion, try finding a shifter out of a Mustang II or Pinto. They come with a small cover plate and the shift indicator is built in. They also have the lockout button. There may be other factory shifters like that, but I have a friend with one in his hot rod(67 Fairlane) and it works like a dream. Looks dern near factory too, not gaudy and out of place.
