I did a search on this but could not find anything specific so I figured i'd ask and get the info firsthand. What exactly is an air horn delete and what benefits do you get by doing this?
I would assume since this isn't a big rig forum that it's in reference to the "snorkle" on the air filter box. Some are tapered and restrictive. IDK if this is the case on your truck or not.
Yup, just rip it right on out of there lol. It's the factory "snorkel" that runs into the factory airbox. I took mine out, less chance of water splashin into it if I take one over the bow lol.
Reason folks remove them is to make the intake louder when you get near or are at full throttle. Really it's mostly a silencer.
Some claim that removing it helps increase airflow into the engine for more power but I doubt you'll ever feel the difference if there is one. I didn't notice any.
Mine is just off for less clutter, and the above mentioned reason of water intake.
OK, that makes sense. The previous owner took the factory air tubes, box and filter off and installed a dual K&N setup so I guess i'm all set. Thanks for the info fellas!
Something else I found with this air horn delete, I pulled the 2 filters off to clean them a few weeks ago and saw that the previous owner had put those "tornado" type thingies inside the air tubes. Do these things really work?
But just because the K&N was installed does not mean the "horns" were removed. I would pull the hoses all all and make sure the horns are gone. They restrict airflow considerably
Thanks for the info, i'll remove those tornados tonight and throw them in the trash.
I'm a bit confused on the air horns, from what I can remember seeing there are 2 tubes that go from my TB to the filters, don't remember seeing anything other than the MAF sensor attached to them.

there is a plastic junction halfway between the filter and the TB. The horns are there
Well you were right again BD, the airhorns are still there. What do they do? They've got some hoses or something going to them and what did you use to extend the the air tube?
Is this only on a diesel? I don't have 2 filters, and I never noticed any horns in my air hoses. I'll check to make sure. I thought he was talking about the factory snorkel from the grille to the airbox inlet.

Those air horns are just silencers, to eliminate "air noise" when you step on the throttle(remember back when you flipped the air cleaner lid on your old quadrajet and it made that massive air noise when you buried the throttle?) Too young? Ok, it's a 1970-80's thing.
The two hoses go OVER the air horns. Cut off the horns, but leave enough material to reattach the two hoses. A hack saw will do wonders.
