Im moving out of my '99 7.3 ext cab and looking at a newer crew cab. It will be a diesel of course and am wondering the good and bad between 2005-up models compared to 2004-down. I know the 7.3 years and such but I think I am going for a 6.0 model this time around. I have driven a friends and like the way it drives. I love the 7.3 but the 6.0 just feels more usable in day to day driving. I am real familiar with what to do with the 6.0 after I get it. Im asking more about the differences in the truck itself. Thanks..
I knew about the transmission. Is the suspension a better setup? Is it your opinion that its a better truck worth paying extra for? Thanks again. I'm just trying to decide if I want to look for '05 and up or not. Not really concerned with how old it is, just want some opinions on which one everyone likes the best.
If you know you want a 6.0 get the newer 2005+ truck. They are much better. Bigger brakes, better trans, better suspension, updated looks. Win-Win as far as I'm concerned.
2005 trans is better than the '03-4? First time i have heard that, thanks. When you say 'better suspension', is that because of the coil spring front end? I have read the turning radius is better on the '05, is the ride improved also or they about the same?

Well for the diesel its the same as the 2003 and 2004 6.0, but the 1999-2003 transmission wasnt as good.
The 2005+ have coil fronts, which enables the better turning radius, and yes, the ride is improved.
And.....I think the '05-up look a little nicer as well. I sorta had my mind set on a '05 but wanted to make sure there wasn't a skeleton in the closet I haven't heard about. Its hard to part with the '99 though, its been a reliable piece of machinery for a lot of years. I'm planning to sell both vehicles in my sig and go to just a crew cab truck.
I think the bigger brakes, Tow/Haul mode and the factory TBS (which is tied into the ABS and the transmission, so the truck modulates the trailer brakes and downshifts rapidly during a panic stop) are worth the price of admission.
Didn't realize the frames were actually heavier. I guess I just assumed they were the same other than the necessary changes for the front suspension.
According to Ford's "What's new for 2005" guide: Upgraded frame has greater load capability and accomodates the new front suspension design on both 4x2 and 4x4 models
There were some changes but don't know if they're heavier per ce. Maybe a better steel to provide the greater load capability? It's not mentioned in the 2005 Supderduty Brochure so I wouldn't think it was that much heavier or they would have touted it more.
