I have a 79' F-250, Supercab, Long bed, 2x4, with the 460. I am getting ready to pull the engine and rebuild.
I want give her some more power but dont really know where to start for parts.
Im not looking to rip a hole in the asphalt i just want a good even powered rig that i can turn the tires every once and a while but still pull the big stock trailer with.
If you want torque, get a good rv or pulling cam, with a double roller early style chain (I think before 1973?), and weiand stealth intake. Maybe headers if you want to spend the money.
That's basically how mine is built and I can burn 44s on pavement, which may or may not be what you are going for.
I had 180$ in the intake, 240 in cam lifter and chain kit, and 1400 in machine work and pistons valves etc. So roughly 1900. But mine had to be bored out and I think the crank had to turned so if you just hone and re ring you can probably save some serious cash and have a nice economical build.
There is some legit good information here so far, but I think the most important factor for you which has already been mentioned is "What's your budget?" Also, you can search the site below to come up with some pretty detailed combinations out there from stock'ish to wild. I would highly recommend some good reading. 460 Ford Forum
By default, keep in mind most stock Big Block Fords are exhaust limited, by that I mean the exhaust ports suck. Anything you can do to open up the exhaust even on a factory setup will help a lot.
Op: the guy before me is also right. If you can, take all the smog crap out, mill down the exhaust hump in the heads, get rid of the log manifolds, take the cat out, and get a nice free flowing muffler. I have the stock manifolds and a 2-1 pipe (also stock), no cat, 3 inch pipe going into a 2.5 glasspack. It flows nicely aside from the manifolds..
yes, you. One of my spare engines I was told was rebuilt with "an rv cam" by the seller, who had bought it from the guy who had built it. No cam card, no idea what it is. I've heard the comp cams thumpr cams have a nice powerband without being too aggressive. and they sound nice.

I wish I could tell you exactly what cam it has, but I don't know. I bought the engine as-is. The builder only told me that it had a discontinued style COMP hydraulic roller cam, lifters, and push rods.
I've heard good things about the thumpr cams. There are different levels of "thump" that you can get.
