recently bought a 90 ranger 4x4 with a 4" lift kit.... heads are cracked and crank is messed up(380,000km). I got a 87 2x4 ranger with a 2.9l good engine in it. there are a few differences in with the trucks please lemme knwo if these are gonna create issues.
NO A/C in truck with good engine
AUTO tranny in truck with good engine (vs 5spd in 4x4)
87 vs 90 2.9l
the 87 has a tranny rad too, but thats aftermarket.
The biggest difference I see between the engines is the EGR on the 87, I'm not sure if that could be removed without problems. If you bring the ECU with the engine you might get some codes about the tranny that you could ignore. I'm not an expert on swaps so please correct me if I missed something.
I am not sure about the 90 but I swapped a 2.9 from a 87 5 Spd into a 89 auto a few years back. The only thing I rember being a prob was the plug in for the fuel injectors. If I rember right the only thing I had to do was put the injectors and the fuel rail from the 89 into the 87 engine.that was no prob. I just wish that I knew about it before I got the engine in. It would of been easier to do on a stand. There should not be any codes going from a auto to a manual or vica versa. I would keep the computer from the 90 in it.
