Stability control saved my bacon!

Took my 5'er for a long 1250 mile trip to upstate NY over the 4th week. While going through a empty portion of TN, I had a blow out on my camper doing 75.

I had just pulled out to pass an electric company truck and just about completed the pass when I heard the tire blow. Thanks to the trailer stability control (which I didn't think worked using a 5'er) and the reactions of the electric company truck driver, I was able to get back into the right side of road and then pull off. The SD nor the trailer so much as wiggled!

When I got out to look at it, I then realized it was 115* outside! Air conditioning works too well.... had I realized it was that hot, I would have paid more attention to my tire presure and bled some off. Time to install a pressure monitor on the 5'er tires.

Other than waiting 2 days for replacement tires, the rest of the trip was awsome! I have over 5000 miles pulling my 5'er, but this was the first time pulling it on land other than souther flats and it was fantastic. The power and the engine brake make a great combination!

Glad to hear that you're all safe and none the worse for wear.

We had a blowout on our 35' travel trailer last summer travelling on the I5 in WA state. Didn't feel it or even know about it until a trucker began blowing his horn and flashing his lights.

After that, I didn't want to risk that kind of situation again and immediately ordered a wireless TPMS from these guys: http://www.tsttruck.com/

Just came back from an 1100 mile trip and the system worked great. I thought that the transmitting range might be an issue, and would need the range extender, but nope, all four wheels were monitored without any hiccups.

If that trailer had ST tires then you were traveling 10 mph over what the max is..slow down. that was your problem.

I have towed many a miles in those temps cross country and no blow out.

X3. LT tires on my 5er now and I sleep better at night (or I should say drive without white knuckles) now.

Curious why you would have wanted to bleed off air? Lower air pressure would have meant higher heat buildup and a higher chance of blowout.

IMHO I cannot stand what we get for trailer tires these days. Made in China / low quality control / poor design . My 35' monster and the safety of my family deserve better than that.

Ok off the soapbox. So happy to hear that you're safe! I look forward to driving a 2011+ someday and having that feature (which I hope to never have to use).

x4 on senix. It's a good thing nothing serious happened. I am no lawyer but seems to me that if someone was hurt or killed from you driving that speed it would be an easy lawsuit. If someone could break into your house, gets injured and then sues you for the injury, I don't think it would be very difficult for them to take a chunk of change/time from you. Again not a lawyer, but seems like you would be held fully responsible.

No bleeding off of the air is required reguardless of the heat factor. That is built into the tire.

Speed was the big factor..along with what the quality of the tire is.

I agree with the above posts. Glad to hear that your stability control helped you out, but you really shouldn't tow that fast if you have ST-rated tires.

On trailer tires, I bought 8 new tires for my gooseneck 2 years ago & absolutely refused to put Chinese tires on it. I searched forums until my eyes were about to fall out. Just when I thought I had found a good tire, somebody else would talk about how they were junk & blow out. Finally I found a Cooper SRM II tire which is made for truck steer tires or trailer tires. 10-ply Load Range E, made in USA. So far, very happy with them. And I ALWAYS tow heavy under the speed limit, especially when it's hot.

Just re-read the ops post a couple of times and I do not see where he mentioned the type of tires.....

For the record, the tires are LT, less than 7 months/500 miles on them. As far as towing at that speed, it was a passing manuver, not a contstant drag race speed.

Any one who has never momentarily exceeded the posted speed to pass a slower than speed limit moving vehicle, cast your stone.

Again, The truck is an awsome pulling machine made for towing..

Thom, please don't get defensive. Over the past eight years I couldn't tell you how many folks I've come across who talk about pulling 75-80 MPH loaded heavy in hot weather with ST-rated tires. Stuff like that gets folks killed, and many of us make it a practice to warn against such behavior. My family drives on the same roads that yours do, and I hope you would take the time to point out max tire speeds to someone doing the same.
