Patio conversations!!!!!
This evening, as my wife and I finished dinner, we shared a few stories of our childhood.
One of mine was a story of when I learned "who" my Grandfather was.
I was 15 and He went with me and My Brother to the local Cattle auction. My Grandfather hadn't been in at least 10 years or more. Shortly after it started, the auctioneer stopped what He was doing and looked straight at my Grandfather and called him by name "Charlie Malone, we are so honored to have you here today, it's been a long time since we last saw you here, We are very pleased to see you"
I had no idea that anyone knew Him, but everyone in the place turned and gave an affirming nod. I was amazed.
Something simple, but had a great effect on me at that age.
She had found out that you could "win" money by entering things in the local Fair!!!
She entered a bunch of things the first year, cookies, drawings, pantings, any thing she could find.
Well, win she did! First place for "sugar cookies"! Paid her $4! (in 1966, $4 was pretty good!)
After she had collected all of her winnings, she had to decide what to do with it.
So, she had this thing for horses, and wanted one. At the age of 13, she walked, yes, walked down to the local livestock auction yard, across town mind you, and bought a foal (horse) for $6. Then told her Grandmother that she did, and her grandmother had a vacant lot that was fenced with chain link and asked to keep it there. Of course Grandma said ok.
Her parents were in Ohio at the time! She went back to the auction yard, haltered this foal and led it through the town to it's new home. A vacant city lot.
Not too bad for a 13 year old girl with a passion to own a horse!
