Newbie Here, Question?

I am upgrading my tow vehicle from a 1992 F-350 Dually Gas version to a 2006 or newer F-350 Dually diesel.
Any advise would be appreciated. What to look out for.
I'm in Southern CA so lots of choices. Mileage on most on the Mkt is 60-100K
The trailer is 10,000 pounds, The car is 3300, the golf cart is 900, spares 500.

Hello Minkoff and welcome to FTE.

Ford has used 3 different Power Stroke diesel engines since 2006, each with it's own unique set of peculiarities.

First, in a 2006-1007 truck you'll find the 6.0L Power Stroke. A quick Google search will show you this is not a well respected engine, although it can be a very good engine. Read up on the 6.0L Power Stroke engine forum for more details.

2008-2010 trucks use the 6.4L Power Stroke. Regarded as a more reliable engine, but also considered a fuel hog due to the first generation Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). Again, if you are looking at one, read up on the engine in the 6.4L engine forum.

2006-2010 used the 5R110W Torqshift automatic transmission. It is a very stout, capable and dependable unit. Most here consider it a much better transmission than the much ballyhooed Allison transmission used in the HD Chevy and GMC trucks.

2011 and newer use the 6.7L Power Stroke. Unlike earlier diesel engines, which were International engines, this one is a Ford engine. It seems to be a good engine for the most part.

Welcome! For a diesel 2006 and newer your options are the 6.0 which was from 2003-2007, the 6.4 from 2008-2010, and the new 6.7 from 2011 through present. These aren't your daddy's diesels and a far cry from the simple 7.3's of old. Suggest you go to the specific engine forums to research specific engines.

The 2005 and up trucks will have coil sprung front ends, larger brakes and much improved automatic transmissions over the 99-04's. I would definitely look for one w/ the towing mirrors and personally I'm a fan on the integrated trailer brake controller and upfitter switches which were options in 2005 and up trucks. Good luck on your search!
