Power steering failed with ZERO warning

My son was driving our 2002 Mountaineer when the P/S just quit. It never made any noise, had plenty of tranny fluid in it, it just quit. When I jack it up, the steering works fine, no hitches or sticky points. So, I replaced the P/S Pump, still no power.

Is there a valve between the pump and the rack itself that could have failed? There are no fluid leaks what-so-ever, never have been. This has me stumped.

Thanks,
Thom
2002 Mountaineer, 178,000 miles.

I don't recall if the 2002 Mountaineer has electric variable assist power steering (VAPS), but if it does, you will want to confirm the electric assist motor and sensors are not unplugged. I ran in to that with my former 2004 Lincoln LS, the dealer knocked the assist electrical connector loose when doing some warranty work and with it unplugged it felt as if there was no power steering.

I will try and get it on a lift and see if there are any connections that may have loosened up. Not sure if they have the electric control, but it is worth a shot!!
