Chev 303?

Hi,

I browse old Pop Mechanics and Pop Science on the web. The Aug 62 issue of PM referenced a Chebby 303 as a replacement for the 283 in the 63 ChevyII. It was notable as one of only two 'new' engines from GM for that year.

Since I never heard of it, I started looking around. The silence is deafening.
I've found a few 'complete' lists of GM V-8s as well as some Chebby II refs, but the 303 is completely absent.

Anybody know anything about it? I just wonder if they found a major flaw with the design, or maybe it was just quietly killed because it made no sense.

Thanks,

hj

"303" never made it, was probably just an idea.

302 was to be found in the plain-wrap 1967 Z-28, which was just a Camaro with a Z-28 option which included the 302 and some other goodies. They figured out it had a nice ring to it and then slapped the badges on subsequent cars. Rated at 290 HP, it actually put out about 350+. Not a Chevy II motor.

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...omparison.html

Chevy parts bin motors:

302 = 327 with a 283 crank to start with, mods made later.
307 = 283 with a 327 crank.
305 = small bore with 350 crank.

If you take a 265 and stroke it with a 350 crank, you get a 307 also. I don't find a combo that makes a 303 unless you fiddle with the bore.

I remember guys saying they made a 301 out of a 283, not sure how they did it.

Misinformation, or a change of plans methinks....

Bore the 283, 60 over. They weren't too dependable as the cylinder walls were very thin at that bore. The heat couldn't escape fast enough and they usually overheated.......quickly!

They must have suffered some rounding error, as that only comes out to 292. I have a high school buddy who read the Hot Rod or other fine mag article about how it was OK to overbore your 265 by some larger-than-you'd-think amount. Instant overheat. That motor and the '55 or '56 Nomad it came in sit in boxes and on blocks to this day....he's retired now, maybe it'll run again. Maybe.

A 265 bored .090 with a 327 crank would overheat and be a 301.....

I think you're probably right. I read about it in the 'preview' of upcoming cars.
When I moved on to the issue with the '63 models and their data, the 303 was nowhere to be found.

Thanks,

hj

I have a British .303, and I used to have a Ford "3.03".

Maybe it was an intentional misinformation leak from GM to throw Ford, and especially Chrysler off. The disaster known as the 1962 Dodge and Plymouth started with some moron from Chrysler overhearing a conversation about the upcoming Chevy II and thinking GM was downsizing the full size Chevy.

I think it was only the 57-59 blocks that had thick walls.They could be bored out .120 to make a 301.That was gm's original reason for the 302.
