Gas tank pressurizing

On a recent long drive home through some very hot weather, I noticed a strong smell of gas at the back of the truck. Now, I've caught a whiff of gas before the trip but it was always faint. Figured it was some gas that dripped on fill up.

At a rest area, I go and look around see no leaks and finally check the fuel cap. Lots of pressure trapped. I ended up leaving the cap off the rest of the run home. Can't find a cause. Any ideas??

Ya know BE, that just happened to me too. We left Nebraska and made most of the way through Kansas when we stopped to refuel, when I opened the tank a big whoosh of air came out. That's the first time that's EVER happened to me. It was hot out, and I had just used Lucas fuel treatment, and it was the first stop in a couple hundred miles. The heat maybe?

Well, it was 105+ and we were running for hours at 70+. At first I thought it was the replacement exhaust I bought but none of the fuel lines go on that side. Bought a new gas cap (cheap enough) and double checked all the fuel and return lines. All seems good. Truck ran cool, at least on the temp gauge but the under hood temps were definitely up. Guess that may have been a contributing factor.

A little cooler outside temps, same speeds, and the truck stayed cool also. It hasn't happened since or before so I didn't really check anything out, chalked it up to the hard running and ambient temps. Nice to know it seems to be "normal".

Took my infrared out today to check what temps look like on a 94 degree day.

Under hood at intake about 150. At the exhaust on both sides, 650+. At radiator about 170. Gas tank was 120 at muffler side and 105 at the other. Readings were aimed at the metal cradle. Muffler was at 170 and 230 at the exhaust tip.

Interesting.

Had that happen to my '97 Tahoe - for years.
If I filled up on a hot day, fuel would start coming out
of the "vapor canister" inside the engine compartment.
I replaced gas caps multiple times to no effect.

I would just fill-it half way and it seemed to minimize the occurence.

Nothing so far about my Ex or PSD comes close to my
experiences with my GM vehicles of the past.
