Hey guys! I noticed a few times that my $wd doesnt work. Kinda defeats the purpose of having 4WD lol. Well my tranny needed some workin on and whie it was off, I tried out the 4WD in the t-case. All gears work as they should (2HI, 4HI, 4LO). This means the hubs arnt engaging. Well, me with my limited mechanical skills, took the hub cover off to see if something obvious was wrong. I was told if its crudded up or the teeth were rounded off, then thatd be why it doesnt work. It looked fine. It had obviously been drove through some water becasue of the chocolate milky color of the grease and rust on the spring. But other than that it looked fine. What are some other causes of the hubs not engaging?
i can't believe anyone with a 4wd truck still has them things installed on a 9th gen truck.
we complained about them back then when the trucks were new lol.
i bought my last one in '99 a '96 that was 3 yrs old.those auto locking things went in the trash on my second payment i think.
Lol so your vote is on installing manual lock-outs I take it lol.
How do you take them off? Im stumped on that part. I forgot my brothers got a junk Bronco layin in our yard lol. Dana 50 front end with, you guessed it, manual lock-outs!
there ya go!
you just unscrew the Allen head bolts (drill out any that don't turn or brake off,and just replace with new bolts) then just follow your nose with the snap rings.the large center nut requires a spindle nut socket.........hold the phone.....this has been covered in full details many times here.you'll find it easy via search.
anyway, pull all that junk out and use the locking nuts and manual lockers from your donor.
even when them things worked, they'd just kick out on you when you backed up hahaha.useless trash.we swore at them back in the day,and just thinking about them miserable things and being stuck once (all it took for me) out in the cold at night,a many choice words.....ahh the fond memories is making me want to swear at them again.
friends don't let friends drive 9th generation fords with auto locking hubs.
Not sure where you are pricing hub assemblies at but advance and autozone have them for the Dana 50/60 for about $150 for the mile marker hubs. Summit has the Warn hubs for $190. It is some of the best money you will spend putting manual hubs on.

Matt
I got mine for FREE...Warn's.....Came with the TTB/Rear axle I bought for $50...
I doubt the bronco came with the heavy duty front axle, maybe it was swapped out at some point, but you are right you can't beat free. Another option is to check the salvage yard for some used manual hubs.
You need the conversion nuts and washers for their locking action. I made a post a while back of a horribly beat up spindle and trashed hub nuts because some moron didn't put the locking washer back on. Surprised the wheel didn't just come off. The only thing wrong with your auto lockers is they aren't in the trash can.
No it is not similar. What you do is take out all the guts from the auto hubs to include the hub nuts. Now you put your new set of hub nuts on (axle specific) then put the guts of the manual lockers in per the directions on the box and voila! Get some bearing grease too to make sure everything is well lubed. It's so easy its seriously not even funny. Note:get snap ring pliers and save yourself the heartache.
