the floorboard on my passenger side is completly rusted out and gone. it is rusted from the edge of the seat to the front of the cab (cant put your feet down). is this easy to repair? how much if i do it myself? how much for mechanic?....any reply will help.
Dennis carpenter sells floor boards, make sure you ck out your cab mount also, pretty easy fix with a mig welder, and cut off blades in your small grinder.goodluck
And also, doing it yourself is always going to be cheaper than paying someone else. But having said that, it can be more costly in the long run if you get in over your head and have to pay someone to clean up your mistakes, and finish the job.
welding is the "correct" way to fix them. you can then rustproof the welds with undercoating or whatever and it should last at least as long as the stock pans did. However, a lot of rednecks and etc just cut out the rust (or not) and rivet in the replacement pan over top the old one, drilling holes along the perimeter. If you cut out the rust with an angle grinder/cut off, or a body saw, or even a sawzall, and you have enough mean on the edges of the pan to retain the new pan, you could rust proof the old pan after cutting it out, put seam sealer in, put the new one in place, and drill and rivet it in place and it would last theoretically just as long. at any rate much better than holes in the floor board.
Depends on where the rust is, too, but if its in the flat portions you can just grab some light gauge sheet metal from the local metal place, or even home depot, and use it instead of a full pan to save some money.
