The only benefit is if you're already having A/C cooling issues that are related to having too wide of an air gap. Reducing the air gap only postpones an imminent replacement for your A/C clutch and/or pulley, but can easily buy you another couple years of good cooling before having to spend the bucks on the replacement clutch/pulley.
In other words, if your A/C is cooling properly now, you really have no need for fiddling with the air gap... unless you just want to do it proactively.
Did this mod today, it was fast and easy, was able to get the gap from .035 to .022. A/C is consistanly cooler.
I used the part numbers and instructions from the link in post 5. My shim kit didnt come with a .025 shim the smallest was .030, but its working, i have a 2002.
