Hello everyone. I've got a 65 f100 that came w/the 240 six and three speed tranny. The engine has since been replaced with a 351w, but the tranny is original. The problem is that it leaks like the Titanic. I check the gear oil every couple of months, and usually every time I check it I have to add almost a quart, more sometimes. I hardly ever even drive the truck (I've had it for two years and just barely over 3k put on it, but only because other truck was in the shop for about 7 months) It is still a nuisance though. I don't really have the money for a swap right now, but I thought some new seals would be nice. I'm really not sure which transmission I have, if it is a Ford, tremec, or what. I tried to look up seals on autozone and they didn't carry any for the ford tranny. Any idea where I might come across some? Thank you all in advance --J. Bird
Sounds like a nice idea. I suppose I could wait and save up a little and just keep adding gear lube for the time being. Thanx everyone for the assistance. BTW, I got the e-mail from 44dwarf. Thank you for telling me where to find the seals. I thought about a car-type toploader 4 speed before. The truck honestly doesn't get a lot of truck-like use, I usually just cruise it around town a little once in a while, or take my girlfriend out in it or something. Do you know if there is anything special that I should know before I start thinking about the swap (clearance issues, clutch issues, etc.). If not it's all good. If I decide to check out the toploader thing I'll find out sooner or later anyway. I thought about a Mustang T-5 once, but I read in several places about complications with the clutch linkage, and even thought about shifter location w/my bench seat. Who knows, I may even wind up selling the truck. But thank you both for your help. Oh, sorry this is so long-winded again. lol I'm really excited that I've got two solutions now, and I can't stop rambling.
AS FAR AS PUTTING IN A TOP LOADER IT IS NOT THAT HARD. THE CLUTCH AND ALL THE STOCK GEAR WILL WORK BUT YOU HAVE TO SHORTEN THE DRIVE SHAFT, OFF COURSE YOU HAVE TO CUT A HOLE IN THE FLOOR BOARD AND LOOSE THE COLUM SHIFTER BUT THAT IS NO BIG DEAL. HURST MAKES A SHIFTER FOR THE TOP LOADER SPECIFICALLY FOR THE FLOOR CONVERSION. FINDING SOMONE IN YOUR AREA TO SHORTEN THE DRIVE SHAFT IS GOING TO BE THE HARD PART. IF YOU WANT I CAN MEARSURE MINE AND LET YOU KNOW WHAT TO CUT IT DOWN TO. OTHER THAN THAT PIECE OF CAKE.
That sounds great. The hole in the floor is no big deal, I already have a floor shift conversion on my 3-spd., and I don't mind to cut another hole. The driveshaft isn't either. There is a guy that lives about 15 minutes from my house that will make one up for 25 dollars. He's already made me a rear one, it seems pretty solid. (I busted a U-joint and the rear driveshaft fell out and got all dented up) If you wouldn't mind too terribly to measure your driveshaft that would be great. I assume you do have a two piece, I do anyways. If not it's not a big deal. It might be a while before I could get to the toploader swap, but I think it would be well worth it. Do you have any suggestions as to what I should try to get one out of to mate w/my engine, or bellhousing. I have the stock bellhousing for the three speed right now. It's joined to a mid 80's 351W. Thanx again for all the help. I really appreciate it.
