Fuel efficient carb?

Hi,
I'm new to this forum and I'm hoping to gain some insight.

I had to replace my carb about 8 months ago, ever since then (the best I can tell) my mileage has gone down. Used to be 22 hwy, now I'm lucky to get 16.

My truck is an 82 f150, 300 six, 3sp,OD manual, 2.47 9 inch rear end.

I'm wondering what you all think is the most fuel efficient carb. I have a 1 bbl (believe it's a carter).

The truck is a daily driver, I don't tow and rarely carry any more weight than my cross box with tools (carried the same stuff when I got good mileage).

Thanks for any input!!

Do you still have the carb you took off? From what you have said, THAT carb (basically the jet/fuel rod combination) would be the combo I would try to put in your current carb. (I assume a YF variant of some type)

What caused you to change it may I ask?

BTW I'm somewhat "envious" of your R/A-Trans combination...

My guess is that the new carb you got had different jets/metering rod, etc. than the old one you removed. I'd rebuild the one you took off and try it again.

2.47 rear axle? Im intrigued...I thought the lowest ratio ford made was 2.73. regardless Im getting 20 with the 3 speed auto and the 2.73s

As for your mileage issue...Its your jets like AB mentioned. Lower the number, the less fuel flows through.

I changed the carb because my buddy (a mechanic) told me the difference between the time to rebuild and the cost of the reman carb would be a wash, plus there would be a warranty with the reman carb.

It went bad due to the gallon of sludge we found in the bottom of my only working gas tank. After the change I put in an inline filter besides the carb mounted one between the mech fuel pump and the carb.

After that I replaced both tanks, once again debris came unlodged and I again replaced the carb with another reman (under warranty from my buddies shop).

In hindsight I wish I never would have let go of that carb (just for a measly core charge HMMMMM)

As for the rear end ratio, from all my research, including the axle code, that is what it shows to be. I have not taken it apart to count the teeth to make sure though. We turned the drive shaft while it was on the lift and it turned about 2 1/2 -2 3/4 times for one wheel rotation. I figure since that is so close to what the code says it probably is a 2.47.

I can post pics of my carb when I get to my home computer, mabye someone can identify it and advise me as to what has to be done to get better mileage. I'm also willing to simply buy another one (so I don't have any down time - daily driver and all) if it has a reputation for being a fuel miser.

Thanks,

I really can't tell what carb you have now but I must assume a YF variant of some type. Or a YFA non-feedback version. (non-puter controlled).. The good news is that it can be tuned for optimum fuel economy with the right jet,and fuel rod if so. (plus adjusting) Doing a little research and with some help from others here I'm sure you can get to where you want to go especially if you can use a screwdriver with a little practice....

Sounds like u've solved ur fuel quality problems for now at least..just now get a 2nd opinion as to what you need done on your carb.

Yea 2.47 sounds right, just didn't know they came in the 9". My 85 had the same setup, 300/SROD/2.47's but an 8" rear.
