I was at dealership recently, considering Excursion purchase and happened to inquire about 2004 model year order date. Was informed that typically dealers would get order info for following model year around the middle of June.
Salesperson called my back next day to let me know there would be no 2004 Excursion. I asked the business manager there in a separate conversation and they confirmed this info. I was surprised at this because it is contrary to what I have seen in this forum.
Is this information valid, or are they trying to hard sell me the 2003. They know that I am very interested.
Especially jschira for the link to the 2004 order guide. I really like the dealership and the salesman. I have done business with them before, and their service department staff is very professional.
However, I must agree that when it comes to this matter, they are idiots. As my personal philosophy calls for giving people the benefit of the doubt most of the time, I will brand them as ignorant rather than deceptive. I like to think these guys will eventually become more prepared for the educated consumer.

The order bank open and JOB1 dates for the '04 X's have been available to the dealer for 2-3 months. Ford's press release about the X clearly stated that there would be no X AFTER the '04 model year because of an '05 redesign of the SD that Ford did not want to have to do to the X.
You have to remember, most auto purchases are done on impulse. I know, you spend months studying the situation, but for most people, the decision to pull the trigger is a snap decision. Dealers know that. They want you to pull the trigger now and at their dealership. That is why car shopping is an all day affair. Every dealer tries to keep you at their lot as long as possible, trying to wear you down and keeping you from shopping around.
Bart - If you are good-hearted and want to believe that your dealer made an innocent mistake, you go for it. I don't believe it for a minute.

That's the REAL point of dealers' negotiating the price of a vehicle- it gets you into the buying mode without realizing it. You ask, "how much will you take/ what can I buy it for/ what's your best price?" and the dealer responds with, "make me an offer" and the two of you are off. 4 hours and 1 bottle of aspirin later, you're an owner. A few of us dealers have seen the light and gone to 1-price selling (for us that means invoice), but we're still a VERY small minority. I tell my customers this: for the sake of the CONSUMER, I hope the other dealers wake up and start doing business our way; for the sake of my WALLET, I hope they never do!

Saturn has been successful at 1 price buying, MSRP
People like Saturn because they know that everybody gets screwed the same.
Personally, I am sick and tired of the "low wholesale for your trade-in and full MSRP for the new car" starting point of most dealers
i have a feeling that the dealers were told that there would be no 2004 excursion.. but apparently ford has changed their mind. Way back almost a year ago an article in four wheeler had said that they would stop making it, and while buying my f-350 last november i asked the dealership out of curiosity and they had said thats what they had heard as well. Although they are idiots for the most part, i think there was some miscommunication on this topic. glad to hear its gunna stick around!
