Hey! I'm new at this.
I purchased a 1989 Ford f super duty four years ago. Paid 400$, 72,000 miles, 460 engine zf five speed over drive trans. 16 inch ten bolt duel wheels, I installed new clutch assembly, new brake pads, lines and hoses all around. a tune up, two sensors and tires all around. Air pressure kept to 80 psi. From Michigan, Have hauled a couple tons to North Carolina twice. A 8 by 32 foot office trailer grossing 19,000 to Mississippi. From ms, back to NC. It uses a quart of oil every 200/250 miles. Any ideas on a fix?
I get a BAD shimmy on certain bumps, wants to take to the ditch. Pot holes are getting to scare me. I'm replacing both tie rod ends. Is this the dreaded death wobble??
Love the truck, it ain't pretty, but, no lack of power. It do like it's gas!
I've installed new pcv and egr valves. Truck has sit (very few miles on it). I run rislone thru it for about an hour, figure the rings were carboned up. I will see in the next couple oil changes. Thanks for the quick replys.
Death wobble, unless you catch the shaking in time by hitting the brakes, will shake the wheel uncontrollably until you get it down to 10mph or so. It doesn't really cause the truck to veer to the side if that is what you were suggesting by "in the ditch". The most common cause on the 87-97 trucks is the track bar bushings.
Well, the shimmy problem(death wobble?) I believe I have cured. Both tie rod ends are replaced with new. One was very loose. And changed front tires to rear. Will know tomorrow. Will know about the oil by next oil change. Thanks to all. I will check with this site occasionally.
