ring and pinions

Guys
I have 2 dana 44 closed knuckle axles. One of them has a busted ring gear but a good pinion. Is it possible to mix and match ring and pinions between the 2 axle assmeblies to make ONE good set? I really cant afford a new set at this time.
As far as u-joints for the front axle drive shafts, some say to use the ones WITHOUT grease fittings and others say to use a standard u-joint but take OFF the rubber seals. What is the PROPER method? thanks in advance
regards
Ben

It's probably not a good idea to mix ring and pinions because they wore differently and probably won't fit nicely.

If they're not worn badly and are set up properly, you should get several thousand miles out of them.

They will be good enough to get you on the trails. Just make sure you set the pinion depth correctly.
I buy the cheap U-joints with the grease fittings and leave the rubbers on them. I your truck lives in the mud take the rubbers off and grease the joints everytime you go out. The U-joints without grease fittings are better, but cost about twice as much.
Iuse the cheap ones and keep a spare under the seat.

I have the stock 4.11 ratio on both. I was thinking just to yank both carriers out, and swap the GOOD ring on the one carrier to the carrier with the bad ring. I didnt plan on disturbing the pinions at all. Remember, I am not a mud runner at all. The only time I use 4wd is in snow here. Any other time, I never use it. Hey miller, did u see that I have the closed setup? In order to change that joint, you HAVE to pull off the brake assembly and pretty near disassemble everything to get at that joint. THe way I see it is, get the right joint from the outset bec it will COST MORE in labor to tear into it again should an el cheapo blow! The Q is, whats the RIGHT joint? grease fitting or NO fitting? LOL

The "sealed" (no zerk) joints are considered better for a few reasons:
1) the seals are tighter because they're never supposed to have to stretch & let excess grease out
2) the seals never have grease hanging out to collect dirt & tear up the seals
3) they're not drilled for grease to flow through the crosses, so they have more metal & are stronger.
