My F100 Project

Hey guys I'm in the planning stages of a project truck. Right now my first choice would be a 67 to 72 f100 which is why im posting this here but im also open to any prior year ford if a deal comes up. I don't have a truck yet but i wanted to make this thread to get some advice.

I looked at a 67 a few days ago. It had the 352 and three speed. The body panels were in nice shape but it needed floor pans and front body mounts. It was lowered and a lot was taken apart. He wanted 1600 for it. Is that a good price for one of these trucks?

Alright onto my ideas. If you guys could give me opinions and advice on anything im planning on doing that would be great.

Motor:
Im leaning towards doing a 460 build. They're easy to find and have a lot of aftermarket. If i could get my hands on one with a zf5 that would great also. Im hoping to be in the 400 to 500 hp range.

Transmission:
Really no idea here. If i could get one with a zf5 that would make it easy

Front suspension:
Im leaning towards putting a mustang 2 front cross member in. Im also debating on whether to just get drop beams in the front. I would like the truck to handle pretty well so that has some impact.

Rear suspension:
Im leaning towards putting a 4 link in. Im not sure if parallel or triangulated would be best so if you guys have opinions on that that would be great. My other option would be to just keep the leaf springs and do an axle flip or something else.

Interior:
Im planning on keeping it mostly stock. Ill probably get panneles and carpeting and such from lmc truck. Id probably keep the original style bench seat.

Paint:
I drew up a couple paint schemes you guys can look at. As youll notice i really like red and black haha. Im planning on using matte colors for a flat look.

If you guys could give some opinions or advice that would be great. This is gonna be a long term project. I wanna do everything right the first time. I dont wanna be continually upgrading things as i go along. I want to put something in and be done. Thanks for any adive you guys have.

'wrote a project rebuild outline in the Dent forum but it also can be applied to Bumps: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...ml#post9170662

I also have a build thread for my 70 with the plan spelled out very clearly in my first post... I suggest you consider doing the same to stay on track: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...l#post11702530

Motor/Trans: Your call. If the engine/trans is running decent, I would concentrate on the rest of the rig.

Suspension/Steering:
Easiest: DJM lowering beams and: DJM spring hangers & shackles; Or a rear hanger flip with a couple of leaves removed; Or, Airbagit axle flip or Fatman Fabrications axle flip. C-notch advised. Besides lowering the center of gravity, make it handle better, consider addressing shocks, springs, and sway bars.

Here are some sources and PNs
Bilstein Shocks: Fronts- F4-B46-1105, Rear- F4-B46-1326
Front sway bar: OEM 1.125-inch or AddCo. I have a spare Addco if you're interested.
Rear:1-inch AddCo.... Might have to modify if ya do an axle flip.
Poly Bushings from Energy Suspension

Medium Difficulty: Front - CV subframe swap for the front. Rear - One of the methods stated above for the rear or an MN12 (Cougar/T-bird) IRS subframe swap. Here is a source for the MN12 retrofit Team321 LLC Ford Truck Independent Rear Suspension (321)960-5945 dheld@cfl.rr.com

Very Involved: Mustang II-style IFS for the front (Heidt's, Fatman Fab, etc.) and a three-link, four-link, or ladder bar rear suspension conversion. Personally, I would prefer a triangulated 4-link a truck arm and panhard bar set up from GM.

.......Mix n match at your discretion.

Power steering and power brakes is a must in my opinion. Driving these things with manual systems is real work.

Interior... Your call. I like buckets.

Paint.. I like black on top, red on the bottom, and a silver bump. Btw, I guess you're looking at a longbed. Those paint schemes will tend to emphasize its length.

One of the main things i dont wanna do is do things in stages. When i do something i wanna do it once rather than a couple times. Like when i do the front suspension i dont wanna put drop beams in, drive it around for a while then put a cv or mustang front end on it. Ill still do things in parts though. Ill focus on the body until i get it all finished up, then do the front suspension etc. Im planning on not really taking the truck out until its just about finished so i dont mind if its down for a couple years.

The easiest to very involved suspension options were just that, options for you to consider.

My build includes some experiments namely the carb to EFI, then to see what a TKO-500 would do for mileage. If it doesn't pan out, I can put the EFI and trans in one of my other vehicles.

Good luck to ya.

400hp is no problem out of a 460. They came with up to 390 in stock form. It's just a matter of finding the right parts. Look for C8VE, C9VE or D0VE heads. Use an early timing set ('68-'71). It will bring your cam up to 0 instead of retarded 4* (cam) / 8* (crankshaft). That should help it a bit. $1600 sounds high for what you describe but it all depends on where you are.
