Okay, I saw all the threads on this, but I'm still not sure what my best bet would be. MSD, Duraspark, etc. My truck is a 71F1004x4, custom exhaust, 3:50 (soon to be 4:10) gears, 36" Coyotes, headers and an all stock 360 (original) with 76k miles. I don't wheel it or tow, I usually only drive it once or twice a week.
Personally I would leave the points in -due to the fact that you only drive it once or twice a week .
If you want to upgrade the igniton then I would go the petronix way .
It is bolt on and it is very cheep .
If you can find a donar vehicle with the dura spark then go that way .
How much do you want to spend? http://www.performancedistributors.com/forddui.htm
Well then there are 3 routes to go
1: Leave it
2: the petronix kit - last time I checked it was 70-80 bucks
3: dura spark set up : donar "FE" truck and pull all the needed wiring . I dont like messing with wiring so personally I would do the petronix setup http://store.summitracing.com/defaul...&d=11&x=20&y=9
Go to distributor conversion kits and select the petronix lgnitor solid state igntion systems .
The duraspark is a very easy swap. Duraspark is also a very good product. You would be happy with it. You could buy all the duraspark stuff for $100 new, orget it from a junk yard.
I had points for a long time, until I gave up on the upper bushings going bad and throwing the dwell all over the place...
I used a '76 distributor with the Duraspark pickup in it. I originally used the Ford OEM Duraspark box, but went to an MSD 6AT and WHAT A DIFFERENCE! (It may not be a "duraspark", it's the small cap).
Anyway, you can get away with an OEM electronic distributor and an MSD 6AT (and decent coil) and it will wake up like you wouldn't believe...
The MSD somewhat cleaned up the idle on my 292/292,.554"/.554" cam
I would definintely recommend the pertronix. The duraspark is great also but is a little more expensive unless you go to the scrap yard. The pertronix is incredibly simple to install. You can never go wrong with the MSD ignition boxes. I have witnessed the difference and was amazed.
Another vote for the Pertronix. Took me all of 10 minutes to install, made a world of difference! My pickup gained 2mpg, will sit and idle at 500 rpm all day and has a noticable ammount of extra hustle.
Crane cams has a new part similar to the pertronix setup. Summit has it for $65. A bonus with it, is it includes a built in adjustable rev limiter. It is called an XR-i
