OK I have 2003 E-350 with 7.3. It uses to only take a few seconds to prime the system and fire off. It now whines for like 45 to 60 seconds before the system gets fully primed? Should I just plan on replacing the rail mounted pump and be done with it? The pump I am hearing sounds like it is right under drivers side seat on rail, but I have never had to replace one. What should look for? or any other suggestions? The pump in tank has been replaced about 2 yrs ago.. any help greatly appreciated.
Jeff
There is no pump in the tank from the factory. Most pumps only run for about 20 or so seconds. Yes your pump is on the frame under your seat. Shouldn't take as long as its taking. Could be the pump is weak or there is a restriction pre-pump. Maybe what was done in the tank before was related to clogged filters in the pickup/mixing chamber. In other words you might have gunk in your tank. Some guys have checked the pickup by putting a hose on the suction side of the pump, then into a fuel can and see if the pump works properly.
Stinson, thanks for quick reply. We are talking about a Econoline E-350, so there is No pump in this tank? If it is Not, I got ripped off big time by local Ford dealer..Charged me like $538 for in the tank pump & labor on top of that to replace it. I will not even get into what all that did me on that deal .
as to the pump test, thats a great idea. I will try this . I truely appreciate the info.
If I need to replace the pump on rail, is that a big deal? I want to do it myself.
Sorry, didn't catch the E part. Don't honestly know about a van, but if you have one on the rail, I doubt there is also one in the tank. Someone who knows for sure will jump in with the right info. You might want to look into the " hutch" mod which will fix your problem, and a few other related issues. No, changing the pump is easy. If you have to, the info is here.
Thanks for great pics Crewcab, Yes it seems the Mod does Not work on the vans do to profile of the tank..I can surely see where that would be a much better system than factory one.

What they probably replaced was the whole sending unit (Crewcab's first pic) but not a pump. Just a pump has an MSRP of $581.00. A sending unit is about $300.00 + labor. Check your bill/receipt. Part numbers should be listed.

I think your statement in first quote pretty much sums it up. There would be no second pump.
