Air conditioning

On my 83 f150 4X4 5.7 liter pickup, the airconditioning works but isn't really cold. I believe I need to add refrigerant. What are the specs or do I purchase a refill cylindar at an auto parts store and fill until full? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

If it hasn't been retro-fitted to a refrigerant such as R134A or another easily purchased varient, then you would still have R12.. which is expensive and can't be purchased without a license of some sort.

Do you know what you have?

Unfortunately I have no idea what kind I have. Any idea how to figure that out? Would it be written somewhere on or in the truck?

You may or may not notice a retrofit label or sticker somewhere under your hood, on the core support or even on the A/C box somewhere. There are also these adapters that fit onto the old connections that are commonly used with R134A retrofit conversions or you may just have a plane old cap on the connection.

If you have Schrader valves (look like tire air pressure valves) under the hood on the AC lines it's most likely still R12.

Call around, some shops and household HVAC service places still deal with that stuff.

There is a substitute for R12, its called R12 Freeze. You won't find it at AutoZone or others, but an automotive a/c specialist should know where to get it. It works the same way r12 does (compatible), and not as expensive.

The R134 fittings are a quick connect style, R12 uses as Chris pointed out Schrader valves. R12 is liquid gold, if you can find it. Be careful with some substitutes, there are a number floating around that use combustible gases like Ethane and Propane as refrigerants.
