I'm not sure if they cleaned it at the dealer or not. I picked it up out of the parts washer though. I think they just had it in there draining. The dealer told me the cooler was coated with a small film that insulated it and did not allow the two fluids to transfer heat. So my oil temp was about 20-30 degrees F hotter than normal. I wasn't sure why they couldn't add a chemical to the coolant to remove the film, like a normal pre-flush coolant additive. I was told that my system had Ford Gold and Universal Green Coolants in it and that they would cause a gelling effect to happen.\
No rupture or anything like that...
How did they conclude you had Gold & Green coolants?
When they drained the system they had two colored liquids come out. I think the Ford Gold came out first and then the Universal Green came out. They told me the degas bottle appeared to be green before they drained the system so they initially thought the system had been flushed and refilled with the Universal Green, which they said would have been fine. They said the two coolants do not mix together and could cause blockages at turns or corners inside the cooling system flow path (term gelling was used). The original owner took great steps to document every maintenance point that was performed on the truck up to 72K miles when I bought it. I purchased the truck from a large Toyota dealer in town and we believe they topped off the degas bottle with Universal Green Coolant when they check it over/serviced it (I have spoken to the original owner). The degas bottle was completely full when I purchased the truck. It did have a very small leak on the top radiator hose (almost un-noticable), that hose was replaced when the oil cooler was replaced along with the other radiator hoses.
Problem is it is a dealer and they replace parts at any cost. Independent shop may very well have a way to clean out the system for much less money. There is no incentive for a dealer to figure out how to clean the system out.
Ouch! Makes me feel better about the coolant filter I installed that everyone said wasn't necessary on the 6.4.
I installed the coolant filter when my oil cooler failed at 135,000 miles ($3800.00). It was supposed to solve the problem, now I have problems again at 150,000 miles. Shop said they would warranty part, but not labor ($1500).
Just keeping everyOne updated... Pulled about a 6,000 lb load & a 5,000 lb load today. Spread stayed at 3-4. At 70 mph, I noticed they were dead even @ 199 degrees for a good amount of time. With 100 degree outside temp!
Just found out my oil cooler and t-stat needs replaced. Went camping last weekend and hammered down unloaded on a 6% grade to pass some slow pokes. Truck was a beast and passed them very quickly. About 10 min later wrench popped up on display followed by reduced engine power and went into limp mode.
Truck is an 08 Job 1 with 66,000 miles. Dealer called this am and said they needed it for 2 days. Haven't had a chance to talk to tech yet about the splits. I dont think they removed my cab. I think they loosened and tilted the cab versus totally removing the cab. I have diesel care plus and premium car warranty. Hope I don't have to come out of pocket much. Told them to upgrade hoses to double o ring, change oil again even though was just changed last week and to replace coolant.
Glad I had the 11B23 update on my truck. Without it, I would have never known there was a problem untill it was to late.
Anything we can do to prolong life of new oil cooler? I Change oil around 4000 and Will start doing coolant every 30,000. Bought truck with 50,000 and radiators were replaced 3 times. Not sure if they used new coolant or reused mine.
Ordering a filter kit tomorrow. Which kit do you guys prefer? The sinister or Dieselsite kit? One mount near bumper and other on frame?

I have a Dieselsite. Seems to work pretty good. I did search last year on Grainger and you can buy all the exact same parts direct from them and save about $25-30.

Think I am going to order a kit from them. Hope hose is long enough. Prefer black hoses over blue hoses that sinister uses.
Ordered mine from diesel site today. Hose length issue has been resolved thanks to customer providing feedback. Got my truck back from dealer today and installing kit as soon as it arrives. Want to protect that new oil cooler.
Last Saturday my ECT and EOT started to get further apart, normally they were always within a degree or two of each other (198-200). My ECT and EOT dash gauges looked normal with their needles in the exact same place they always are, but my Scangauge II was showing temp splits of 25F-30F. The wrench light on the drivers information display illuminated and the truck went into reduced power mode. I got my truck to the dealer on Monday and after they looked at it they said the computer had stored temp splits as high as 40F. They said there are tiny fins inside the cooler that get coated/clogged with coolant, maybe as the coolant breaks down. Not really sure.
My F-250 is a Job 1 2008 with 102,850 miles on the odo. Pretty big bill to replace the oil cooler though...
Oil Cooler, Dual Thermostat Kit, New Oil & Filter, New Coolant = $535
30 Hours Labor @ $76 an hour (by the book to lift cab) = $2280
Tax & Shop Supplies = $316
TOTAL = $3131
why did they removed the cab for oil cooler replacement???
