I am not into using alternative fuels. I just want to add this to regular diesel to lube the ip pump. I usually buy ATF but got some 2 stroke for free.
I use low ash 2 stroke oil mixed with a fuel conditioner. 1 ounce 2 stroke oil per gallon of fuel. Conditioner is mixed per container instructions.
The engine runs smoother. No idea if there is any mileage increase as I have not checked. I do wish today's fuel was as good as the fuel 30 yrs ago. Burns Bros red fuel was some of the best fuel around, it even smelled like a premium fuel. Today's fuel smells like an old swamp.

I have never used 2 stroke oil. What kind of conditioner would you use?
When I used 2 stroke oil I used 1 quart split between the 2 tanks, and no other additive. I sure made the engine run quiter. I even picked up a little mpg.
I've been adding clean oil to diesel fuel ever since LSD came out. I used to add 1/2 gallon of cheap 20/50 to 10 gallons of diesel in an old Perkins DI i owned back in the early 90's. Recently I switched to 2 cycle low ash as it smokes less. Adding oil to diesel is good for the IP, Injectors and upper cylinders. You can't use it in newer engines with those EPA mandated Particulate filters though which is sad news for my wifes little TDI
So is it ok to use any oil? Atf....20/50.....5/20....... It will just smoke more than 2 cycle.
Yes!................. Pour it in...........It will be fine. Im confident that after many years of doing this in older Diesels that it is actually beneficial to the health of the fuel system. Especially in our older engines which were never designed to run on ULSD which is less lubricious than non ULSD. All your doing is compensating for the loss in lubricity resulting from ther process of removing sulfer from diesel fuel. Diesel fuel was once designated as a heavy oil fuel in the past. All your doing is replacing what was once the fortifying lifeblood of a diesel fuelled engine
General consensus on 2-stroke oil in diesel as an addative is between 100:1 and 200:1, at 200:1 there is a noticable improvement, but testing shows it still lacks being "ideal" best thing you can add is about 2% bio-diesel. Also, atf helps, although not much lube-wise, however it helps keep things nice and clean.
As for any oil, i run WMO all the time, which is usually a mix of atf, gear oil, engine oil, even some hydraulic sometimes. Never cause anything bad so far, imo it runs better with say a 70/30 #2 / wmo.
Stay away from kerosene and #1 fuel oil, IPs dont like the lower grade distillates, no lube and very dry.

Ok, thanks for all the responses. After I go through the 2 stroke I am going to hit the 99 cents store and get some cheap motor oil to add once in a while.
