Recently acquired a 2001 F250 XL Super Duty 7.3L crew cab with AT with PTO. VIN is 3FTNWZ1F21MA23135. 229K miles (has rebuilt engine--not sure about tranny). When shifting into 3rd, there is a shutter that I feel mostly through the steering wheel. It is definitely worse when cold--it stops shuttering after a good 15-20 minutes of driving. Shutter happens whether OD is on or off. A local Powerstroke shop in Anchorage AK pulled the tranny pan and said there were metal frags and fluid was burned (it looks brownish to me and smells a little off, but doesn't seem severe). Based on this, they said I need to replace the tranny.
So I'm hoping for some wisdom and diagnostic help. Firstoff, is this something I should be overly concerned about? Are there other possibilities to check out before shelling out $3000 for a tranny (which I would be hard pressed to do)? Might a tranny flush and fresh fluid help the situation or a waste of 20 qt of fluid? I'll be using the truck to tow a 7000 lb (loaded) cargo trailer from AK to VA in 2 weeks, with my family on board. Will probably sell upon arrival. Thanks for any help.
Forgot to mention it's a 4x4. And, in case it matters, scanner reads ICP sensor and transmission range sensor trouble codes. I also replaced the alternator today (it sometimes cranked slow and failed a bench test for DC output).
Alternators, can cause issues with the voltage fluctuations on the sensors, have you driven it since you changed it?
Honestly, if you are just going to sell, it, either a cheap rebuild, or just flush and filter change and take your chances. If you are going to keep it, look into a John Woods or Brians Truck Shop transmission, or the slightly cheaper option of a Ford HD4R100. Good luck, that's quite the trek.
Drove to work this AM--it still shutters with the new alternator. However, I noticed the shuttering starts not when shifting into 3rd, but when the torque converter locks down in 3rd after reaching cruising speed. This happens whether OD is on or off. So perhaps the problem lies with the torque converter? Any troubleshooting tips for that?
I replaced the tranny filter and flushed and refilled with Mercon V per Mark K.'s article. Still shutters when TC locks up when cold, but no shutter when warm. Leaning toward just going with it as is. There is a PTO switch on the dash with tranny temp gauge, but it's not working (temp gauge stays on 250 on or off, cold or hot). Any troubleshooting tips?
