I recently rebuilt a 351 w out of a 78 econoline. I put new piston rings and connecting rod bearings on. after I got done rebuilding it, It wont start. It ran before the rebuild, but knocked after warming up. I put new spark plugs in, and checked to make sure it was getting spark, I tried using starting fluid and putting gas down the carbuerator, but it still wont start. It turns over but wont start. The fuel pump works and its timed correctly.
are you sure that your timeing is not 180 degrees off? I would try that as long as you are getting spark and fuel. DO NOT use starting fluid on a new motor, it will dry out the rings too bad.
you have spark coming at the wrong time it is 180 off, your cap is cracked, your cap is wet, or the firing order is wrong, that is all there should be to it.
OK, new rings and rod bearings. Got spark. Distributor not moved. Did you find the cause of the knock? Have you checked the timing chain? Do you have adjustable rockers? Got to be overlooking something. Probably simple.
no connecting rod bearing, that was the source of the knocking, but i still cant get it to start, Theres no pointer to find the mark ont he pulley, but I tried this thing where the distributer is supposed to point at the first cylinder when its supposed to fire, and if you feel air blow out the spark plug hole, than its firing at the right time... that went well, Is there any wireing thing that could be going wrong?
That's a good method only if your 100% sure that you put the distrubitor back in the same spot. What about starting from scrach on the spark plug wires? Put #1 on TDC, pop the cap and look where it's pointing, then start from there with your firing order. If that doesnt do it, then double check your carb....if all else fails, you might want to do a compression test to see if your timing chain is lined up correctly..
Dont know what else to suggest.
(Please dont take offence to these suggestions. I've rebuilt an engine and did everything wrong...took a month to figure everything out)
No no Im not taking any offense, if i seem aggrevated its just because of that gosh darnn van, Nothing goes right on it, I had to drill a few bolts off the exhaust manifold. the oil pan was a bitch, I almost got my hand taken off between the block and the oil pan when i had the engine jacked up to take off the oil pan, I was unbolting the oil reciever, and the van started rolling backwards... its just been one thing after another, and I think im done and now it wont even start. before i bolted the exaust manifolds on, I tested to see if it would start, I didnt let it start but it was ready to, it kicked and i turned it off before it cut on, now I get it all together and it wont even start.
Are you sure that you are getting spark at all, are the plugs wet? You just reed to people. Set the firing order on the cap and just keep moving and restabing that dizzy. watch out for fire out the carb. You'll get it.
